A warning for anyone upgrading the instument cluster in the VY series1. I have recently bought a series 2 s-pack cluster ($200 second hand) and installed it in my car. I had it recalibrated by Holden (using the trusty Tech2) and only then found out that the fuel gauge will operate in reverse (shows full when empty and empty when full). Apparently the fuel gauge sender was revised for the series 2 and they are not compatible with each other. The only problem is that the "km's to empty" increases as the guage increases! I am happy to live with that, to get rid of the standard base model dash. A new sender will cost around $250!!!! Also, the cluster had 1500km on the odometer which cannot be changed to show my mileage so if I sell the car I will need to provide a statutory declaration for the difference in km's (the car computer will show the actual KM's). I rang RTA and they didn't care about the change in the odometer.?!. Regards, Mark.
VY Clusters There were 3 different clusters in the VY. There were 2 different items in the series 1, and a different one again in the series 2. Tying the cluster part number to your build date works, or changing the fuel sender unit. Former is much better (cheaper).
I changed my series 2 equip / exec with a s pac (not sure series though). Noticed the k's were kept in the dash, which makes no sense to me, so i opened it up and changed the backing, plastic molding (circle looking bits) and the needles. Took a little while to get all the needles in the correct position but was worth it. Looks much better as you already know, at the expense of my sisters work crewman. :whistling
Thanks Jesterock, I still have my original cluster so that may be on the cards, although the new cluster has an indicator light for the driving lights (handy) and how hard was it to remove the needles? Do they slide straight out and back in again? If it was a big job to do I may just leave it. Once I know how the fuel gauge reads, it really isn't a problem and having 1500kms on the odometer isn't so bad............. Regards, Mark.
The needles just slide off. I would recommend taking a photo of the needle positions when the car is off, red are on and when the car is started. Give yourself an hour to get it all right.
