It really depends what the engine is from to begin with but, should generally have a higher kw than aus versions as aus versions had the luxury of being detuned. Isnt that nice....NOT!!
VT- VX was around 220-225kw for non HSV vehicles
    C5 Corvette(as an example) was around 257-261kw
Pontiac firebird is classed as an F-body-so there LS1 is only around 200-220kw
A big difference really. So do a bit of research but depending on overall costs & what its from it may not be worth it.
Consider other options like the LS6 or go one better & get a
    C5R-427ci-7.0 ltr with a standard 650hp(better than a LS7 with only 500hp!)

Engines are sorta the same,i was told the LS1 was detuned in Aus in several different ways, not just the ecu.
Camshaft, ecu, manifold, throttle body, cylinder heads & valves but,i could be told wrong.
At the end of the day getting hold of a LS6,LS7 or a C5R is the best way to go if your going to import an engine.
Its simply a heck of alot of bang for your buck, especially if you get hold of the C5R engine

You just said the Aussie ones are detuned, now you are saying they are 'sorta' the same. Lets keep it all clear here, the engines are identical. There are different versions of LS1's in the US, but there are also different versions in Aus.

There is the plain 'LS1' with the LS1 block, heads, manifold, injectors and cam. Then theres the LS6, with different block, heads, manifold, lifter and cam. From VXs1 to VYs1 we got a hybrid of the two, which is an LS1 block, LS6 heads, LS6 manifold, LS6 injectors and LS6 cam. They differences aren't massive. The LS6 heads (#241) flow better than the LS1 heads (#853). The cams are pretty well the same, but with a smaller base circle on one and slightly longer valve stems to make up the difference, doesn't matter though.

To summarise, it doesn't matter. If you are getting a rebuilt engine from the US you are likely to have a mixture of LS1/LS6 parts anyway, but it really doesn't matter.

To clarify an LS1 is an LS1 no matter where its from, but an Aus version has different bits & a different tune(de-tune).
When i say they are sorta the same the intention was that they are still an LS1 block no matter what.
