I did a compression test on my 02 V2 Monaro last night, I have done some searching around to see what numbers are considered good or bad on LS1's, and I have seen varied opinions. I believe around 180 is a good healthy motor, anything over 150 is ok.

The engine is 100% stock, with 383,000km
All 8 plugs removed, test was done on cold engine with throttle closed.
I did not put any oil in the cylinders.

1. 165 psi
2. 155
3. 165
4. 155
5. 160
6. 170
7. 155
8. 165

This seems ok to me, I figured anything over 150 would be ok on an engine with 383,000km. The compression numbers are consistent, with no notable highs or lows, and if you add the numbers together for each bank, they are exactly even, so I guess that would be a good sign. Would one consider this to be a decent result?

All within 10% so nothing to worry about unless it's an oil burner or low oil pressure.

At that mileage stuffed lifters or chewed cam lobes, weak valve springs, rear main seal, front seal etc are expected...most exhibit those around 180-200k mark.

Next time you do compression test wide open throttle, count 5 revolutions or just 5...record numbers then do it again but wet test...if there is difference it lets you know more about ring wear or something else to look at.

Don't forget to make siure it won't start befdore testing.

Thanks. I am a bit surprised that it is as good as it is. The car has never been thrashed, but it has been babied as my mums daily driver for 12 years, but has been neglected. I am planning on doing a full rebuild, I have new lifters, oil pump, front timing cover & rear main seal/plate, timing chain, water pump etc to go in. I might just rebuild the top end and put in a baby cam for now.

Just do basic bolt-ons like otr/exhaust/tune then keep driving/enjoying it untill something major happens like rear main seal.

Now got vy t56 sv8 with above bolt on mods...rough as guts, clapped out yet still handling m5 carpark with ease although did bust both engine mounts & 1 rear cv 'economy testing'. Was supposed to be donor vehicle for a ls conversion but old daily was written off by unlicensed mong.
