Hi guys n gals.
I hope I'm doing this right, in the right section?
Could someone please tell me what this engine is.... engine prefix VB.
Is it a 4.9 or 5.0?
Is it common rare, or nothing special.
I have everyone telling me different things and even reading various forums I still haven't dont have a definitive answer.
Any info would be great.

Its a 4.9/304.
Its the hot Holden V8, has standard B cast heads, 955 manifold, baffled sump and L34 conrods standard. 177kW standard too.

It is rare, I've seen Holden documents saying only 5000 were made, in VK SL 134, VK Berlina 234 and Calais 334 mechanical packs.

Thank you mate.
So I guess I stumbled on a little gem then.
Is there anywhere I can find out more info on this?

Whoops, meant to say VK not VL.

B-cast higher flowing heads fitted with larger valves
Brock inlet manifold (with the open style plenum) That's the 955 manifold.
Lightened flywheel
Baffled sump with scrapers & windage tray
Cold air intake
Larger snout on air cleaner
Less restrictive exhaust
Blue printed distributor & advance mechanism

now Damo... lets not get carried away

it was the basis for a warm LV2 304ci 4.9l engine.....
don't forget the cam was standard but it did have a double row chain
the zorst was also standard, plain old cast iron down to one exhaust pipe
and don't believe the HDT guys.. no way it made 177kw !
(they did not test outputs to DIN stds)

Having said that, they were a good engine better than the later V7X hipo
version (which missed the big valve heads) Good with a manual trans
so so with an auto behind :(

Some say the earlier VT prefixed 308ci V5H (used in VH and early VK)
was a better engine

I had a 234 VK Berlina with the 304ci V5H engine M21 combo. First thing i did
was throw it at HDT who fiddled with the Quaddie and added a set of VK SS
extractors and exhaust. That woke it up a bit...

and one final point... the V5H was the basis (with some mods) for the Blue Meanie
VK Grp A SS 'A9L' red engine :)
