After a lot of grief with my VT Calais I decided to bite the bullet and change the steering pump

It was making a lot of idle noise, steering noise and loosing fluid (and a big mess left on top of the oil filter)

After the swap the noise is a lot quieter and seems to be no leaks around that area however, it has power steering but its defiantly more stiff then my executive...

One thing ive put it down to.. is there a different pump for the calais? I mean to swapped out fine? but it has me wondering if i have been sold the wrong thing?

Else I guess the problem could be also put down to the rack? or solenoid? (fuses and hoses are fine/new)

Cheers

Calais has a different pump to suit the variable assistance rack.

From the VT-VX service manual:

GENERAL DESCRIPTION
The power steering pumps fitted to vehicles with
speed sensitive power steering are of the constant
flow type. However, servicing procedures are
essentially the same as those for the droop flow
design, fully detailed in Section 9A STEERING.
The only exception is the outlet fitting, which does
not feature a metering needle valve as in the droop
flow design.
If a power steering pump requires replacement, it is
essential that the correct type is selected. Refer to
the following table and the diagram shown, for
identification details of the available power steering
pumps for the complete range of VT Series
vehicles, regardless whether the system is the
standard or speed sensitive design.
The location of the part number (1 or 3) is as
shown, while the last 5 digits (2) of the V6 pump is
also provided.
PUMP APPLICATION PART NUMBER
V6 ENGINE:
STANDARD 26056053
SPEED SENSITIVE 26056054
V8 ENGINE
STANDARD 26056055
SPEED SENSITIVE 26056056

A lot of the pumps for a V6 on ebay that it is the same pump for VS, VT, VX, VY, Commodore, Calais, Statesman and Caprice.
But then I found these two. Read descriptions.

The pumps look different. Does the one you took off look the same as the one you put on?

If you look closely, one photo is taken from the top and one from the bottom, the 2 pumps look identical in the steel and swap out nicely but thanks for the clarification within those links :)

From the VT-VX service manual:

Champion thanks!

I grabbed the old pump and Ill pull the other out to compare the 2

thinking swapping the outlet fitting between the 2 to rectify it.. have nothing to loose so fingers crossed?

noise is usually air in the system, if you have the tools you can also rebuild the pump, kits are only about $10 on ebay.

Yep, that will work. (There's a spring and spool valve in the non- variable assistance type, so make sure you get that out.)
