    VR Executive
    Hi all,

I have a question about my 1994 V6 VR Executive that keeps overheating. I have had this problem for a couple of years; every time I get it serviced nothing is found wrong with it. It tends not to be a big problem in winter but as soon as it warms up, (20 degree days) it overheats.

    The Problem
Starting with a fully topped up radiator, after between 2 – 4 days it is almost dry. There are no leaks that I can see. When I stop the car I can hear it bubbling rapidly from the drivers seat. Water bubbles out from the overflow container, and I means a S***T load of water. Once the water level has dropped, steam shoots out of the overflow tube instead, and the temperature gage goes to max.

    Repairs done
I have had this problem for at leas ta couple of years and it seems to be getting worse.

    • 18 Months ago I changes the thermostat
    • 15 Months ago I got a new radiator, cap, hoses, compressor for the air conditioner etc.
    • The fan works fine
    • The oil looks good
I am taking it in for a service next week and the mechanic said all you can do is change the thermostat again and see if that fixes it. I don’t think it will. I ask if it might be the water pump and he said he doubts it.

So, before I take it in, I thought I would see if any of you guys had any suggestions on what I should get checked?

    Thanks

When the engine is hot...not boiling, is the top radiator hose under pressure and hard to squeeze? - if not then the system is losing pressure somewhere and if it won't hold pressure then it will boil at 100 degrees instead of 120 deg Celsius.

ok for starters your losing all of that water out of the overflow that would be the main cause of the system being dry, secondly what coolants have you been using? is there actually water flow? I.E is the water pump working?

test the waterpump first, I'm not sure on the best way to do this but from a dead cold engine remove the thermostat and housing and start it, if water goes everywhere its working :p or I guess from a dead cold engine you could just take the radiator cap off and observe, this isn't something ive ever had to come across in all honesty so sorry I can't give you a good water pump test.

I would also advise you to get youir radiator cleaned out for around $100 or get a new aftermarket one for around $150 but check the radiator side tanks on your current one, they tend to crack and have a very sneaky leak.

    good luck mate.

try replacing the radiator cap again. I bought one a little while back and it didnt have one of the seals so it just kept boiling. Or have a look at the marking on the top of the cap. There will be a part that tells you what pressure it will release at. It might be too low

go to a radiator place. my cruiser was doing that. turned out to be a blown head gasket.
they have a guage they pump up the radiator pressure. start it and watch for preassure rising
