    one way around it.
is it your bosses car. or in the company name of who you work for?
if yes then you can drive it. due to work purposes. ie: gotta go pick up stuff from the wholesalers.

i have driven v8 landcruisers in Vic on P's because its one of works cars.
so i would assume its the same in QLD, however best to ask your local roads bureau

even better idea. read the laws your states road rulers make.
if unsure on anything get them to clarify stuff. afterall they should know. (mind you some of them have jack all idea... but still)
even go ask to police as they enforce the rulings.

I live in a rural area and I don't want a v8. My mate is 19, green p plates and his boss lets him drive a v8 land cruiser. I was just curious of the laws

Yep. The media can be hypocrites at times, why not just try and use it to your advantage if you can.

Unfortunately in QLD thats not the case. Used to cause so many problems for us in a Toyota dealership I used to work in, the apprentices arent even allowed to move half the cars around the lot. Of course they did, but taking a customers car for a test drive or to an outsource like a wheel alignment was always a PITA trying to find someone you could spare who had an open licence.

In the OP's mates case, he is driving the car illegally. Out in the sticks though, the cops use a lot more discretion about which laws to apply and which not. If his mate gets caught doing stupid things in it, the blind eye will open and he will get done.
