He was only appointed last last year and took over from long time founder and chairman Tony Cochrane.
Tony probably will take it back over as a caretaker until someone else appointed.

No details yet, but thoughts and condolances go out to his family and friends.

Strong was officially introduced into the role as chairman on November 28 last year, replacing founding chairman Tony Cochrane.

Strong, a passionate motorsports follower, died in a hospital in Melbourne this evening.

Strong had an enviable record in the Australian business scene, chairing the board of grocery giant Woolworths for more than 11 years.

He was also a former Director of the Australian Grand Prix, and held the position as Chairman of the organising committee for the ICC Cricket World Cup 2015. He was also the Chairman of Kathmandu Holdings and a Director of Qantas.

He was also the Chairman of the Australia Council for the Arts, and was CEO of Qantas from 1993 to 2001.

Strong stepped down as Woolworths Chairman in November to take on the new role at V8 Supercars.

Of those to post tributes has been Mark Webber.

“Sorry to hear the news that James Strong has passed away,” said Webber via Twitter.

“He was very special towards my junior racing career. Great guy. Will be missed.”

Speedcafe.com passes on its condolences to his family and friends.
