hi guys.
pretty new to VL commodores so this is probably a stupid question to most.
im looking at buying a V8 and found that they have the trimatic box where as the 6 has the 4 speed. is this because the V8 is an aussie motor and the 4 speed auto doesnt fit or another reason? can the 4 speed auto from your average VL 6 be bolted straight onto the V8 with no worries or stuffing around? dont really like the concept of only 3 gears after owning four speeds all my life.

thanks for your help.

ok where do we start???
at the end of VK, Holdens had a problem, big problem!
none of their engines suited unleaded petrol
so
they bought the 6 cyl (with manual or auto) straight from Nissan
easy fixed...the unleaded petrol problem
not so!
'coz there was a groundswell of criticism saying where is the V8??
so Holdens brought in the Turbo 6 from Nissan (again complete)
NOT F*****g good enough said the punters
where is the bent 8???
so
half way thru the model life of VL
Holdens re-engineered the V8 to suit unleaded (thank goodness they did)
but oops what gearbox goes behind it???
the Nissan ones don't fit and they couldn't take the torque of the V8 anyway
Holdens had stopped making manual gearboxes (VL SS has a BorgWarner box)
aaah ha ....we know...we still can make Trimatics, says Holdens
so you get V8 and trimatics only
(til Brock got into their ears and they made the SS)
here endeth the tale....

and no, the nissan stuff will not bolt on without a lot of stuffing around to the V8!
the Torque converter is different...all different
get a VN V8 4 speed auto ...might be easier

cheers
