Yeah, there's not much need to run two sets of rear speakers... The 6x9's will be more than enough for the rear passengers. Any more sound from the rear and it'll be dragging your sound stage back way too far.

How much do you have to spend on splits?

Even just the 6 x 9's will drag the sound stage back too far. 2 way coaxials in the back is adequate as rear fill in my opinion.

A little friendly rivalry is fine here and there but don't let it get out of control again.

In my own humble opinion, the TSC160Rs are streets ahead of the 1653s.

Fer what it's worth... ;)

EDIT: Oh, incidentally I run the Jaycar kev splits. Can't beat 'em for the price.

i reccon don't put in the rear door speakers. if you're planning on not having a sub, then go with the 6x9's as they will give you better bass than the door speakers

but if you have rear door speakers as well, there will be too much sound, and actually it will sound worse in parts rather than better as you will have sound crossing each other - sound waves going front to back of car from 6x9s crossing sound waves going left to right from 6" door's.

well... not sure how accurate that is, but that's what i was informed when considering the same thing. now i'm running splits up front with 6x9's (and subs), and it's plenty enough.

how much better are the Pioneer TSC-160r 's then the Jaycar Kevlar Splits?

Is it really worth spending the extra money, is there a noticeable difference?
