hello all, i'm having a real problem with my Varajet 2 barrel carbie that has just been rebuilt by my mister. it seems to idle fine but as soon as you put the foot down there is a pause and then seems to slowly drive on (no drop down a gear and go). its also 'spluttering' while its under pressure while driving even in a 70km zone it reacts the same in 100km zone. the worst thing is is it seem to loose a lot of momentum going up hills it will naturally drop into the 'accelerate' section on my vacuum gauge but it has been dropping into the 'power' with nothing almost cutting out i can loose 20-30kph going up a 10-30deg hill. Any thoughts?

ALSO

This happed after the mister rebuilt the carbie to, i was going approx 100kph up a 30deg hill and a vacuum hose blew off i had to accelerate/brake when slowing down to keep car at idle, i have a noise in my 202 that i have been told is probably tappets from when the hose blew off. that noise i can hear when the motor is under pressure, my mister has replaced some push rods but its still there (the noise almost sounds like a vr top end sound), could/ how do you know if it could be a bottom end bearing?

:D wow. first off, even though its quite a long q' its still not really clear. lol. i think there may be a few points to this

1. not dropping down will probably be due to the vac kick down hose to your trans being worn, broken, or just on the wrong port.
2. do you know where the 'mister' set the base timing?
3. do you know which port the he connected the vacuum advance hose?
4. could you give me RPM figures, rather than KMPH figures? or do you not have a tacho?

and i have never heard of a vacuum hose blowing off. do you know which hose it was and where it was connected to? seems awefully strange to blow off, since they are vacuum...

#1 - ok ta
#2 - he set it as per what the gregory's says.
#3 - everything was put back where it belongs (?)
#4 - no, no tacho

...seems awefully strange to blow off, since they are vacuum...:embarrass

could it have been a bottom end bearing that i have spun? (how do u know when they go?)

apparently heater box? (Im not good with carbies in general)

hehe my avatar was from a 253...bottom end bearings not being tightened, my mister and his dad were building it and they each assumed the other had done them up and alas chunks blew a hole in the sump and this was all that was left of one piston.

Is it petrol or petrol and gas. It could b ur choke or the float. Wen it was rebuilt did they put new ones or original ones. Those two parts are almost impossible to find new for the varajet carby now. But u can find them. It's who the carby specialist knows. There is also a small gromet near the choke which u can get as a genuine Holden part but are piss weak as they r to soft and tend to move or twist under pressure. There is certain carbys that use the same kind but alot beta quality and dnt move or twist. Not sure wot carbys tho but if u go to a carby specialist, try find 1 that has been in the industry for 30 or 40 years. They would have worked on these carbys and know in and outs and wot use to give trouble back in the day. New skool dnt have a clue. Also is all the emission and vacuum hoses in the correct spots.

thanks magnetvh for your info, im running only petrol, my partner rebuilt the carbie he got a rebuild kit from a local place. its been a while but it seems to be running ok now after the mister got under the bonnet for a look see. im not sure what hes done but its worked :) yay. i will take ur advice and look for someone with 30+years experience. i believe all the emission and vacuum hoses r correct now. (i was really hoping for a new motor.)

what problems could happen if the motor isn't earthed properly?

maybe that could explain the lack of power.

Am I the only one who thinks the stutter/hesitation and lack of power sounds like it the carb has not been tuned properly.
