Yours is 306 pack. 307 has M20 4 speed instead of trimatic

...wrong wrong! there was NO 307 pack on SL/Es

306 was 4.2 with M20 .. compared to the base SL/e pack which was 4.2 Trimatic auto
308 was 5 litre with M21 known as 5 litre Sports 'A' and 309 was the 4.2 CITY pack - 4.2 Auto
310 was 5 litre with Turbo Hydro auto and was 5 litre Sports pack 'B'

now repeat after me... 306 pack was the :)

More confused but is mine a possible 309 4.2 CITY pack - 4.2 Auto?

Found some info
The VB SLE was available with a
302 pack - (3.3 Litre Auto trans)
306 pack - (4.2 Litre, 4 Speed Manual, Power door locks and Rear seat speaker)
308 pack - (5.0 Litre, 4 speed Manual, LSD, Dual Exhaust, Rear seat speaker)
309 pack - (same as 306, but with Automatic and Power windows)
310 pack - (same as 308 pack auto trans and extras listed previously by Goose)
According to Holden Commodore Performance Handbook:

VB Option Codes
310 Pack-
L31: ENGINE - V8, 5.0 Litre H/Comp
M41: AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION - Turbo Hydra-Matic 400 & 350
AU3: ELECTRIC LOCKING SIDE DOORS
G80: LIMITED SLIP DIFFERENTIAL (L.S.D.)
N10: DUAL EXHAUST SYSTEM
U80: REAR SEAT SPEAKER
A31: POWER OPERATED SIDE WINDOWS

I'm getting confused with the VB SL, my apologies

It is 309 pack, often VB SL/E city pack.

I never took the drums off to check and am unsure whether the 8bolt housing was the same as a 10bolt housing on the outer flange. On the pre Commodore 10bolts, those fitted with disc brakes had a flat outer face on the flange for the hardware to mount to whereas the drum brake models had a rib to locate the rear drum plate. Only learnt this a week ago at a diff shop that bought a 10 bolt wagon diff off me where drum brakes were swapped over later. If you fit discs to a drum housing without machining the faces, you end up with about 3mm play and leaking seals

Common mistake is the number of bolts on the cover plate. Its the number of bolts holding the crown wheel on.
The cover is round, not egg shapped? If so, the diff is an 8 bolt.

8 0r 10 bolt? Is this a reference to number of bolts on the diff housing If so ours has a 10bolt

ooops.. there is the old 'wives' tale again.

the reference to 8 bolt or 10 bolt refers to the number of bolts holding the crownwheel to the diff hemisphere and
NOT the number of bolts holding the cover plate on
