More progress today, now I just have to fit the head unit back properly as the space is a tad to small. Any ideas?

early Commodores are a pain in the arse to fit stereos properly
You'll never get a perfect fit, but should get it a better fit than your pic. What's stopping it from pushing in further ? Is it the length of the unit or the front facia surround ? I usually trim the outer surround/bevel on the front panel. On one of the stereos I had, I left it off all together so it would slide further back

My issue is the front facia surround is too large, can't even fit in the pocket/tray either.

Looks good, would be cool if your surrounds were fake woodgrain as well i think it would suit it with you having a pretty premium style interior

are you talking about the anti-theft outer housing that the unit slides into ?
Yeah no way mine was going to fit either, I had remove it, and just screw the body of the stereo directly to the mounting bracket
I haven't got a closeup, but the pic below shows the best I could get mine to fit. I trimmed back the fascia (and ground some plastic from the inside of the radio opening in the dash) and removed the anti-theft shield. Now the heater box is the only thing that stops the stereo from pushing back any further

My uncle has one in his valiant, I think he just uses a remote but I'm not sure it would look better though i think.

Its what i intend on doing with mine thats why I'm going to put the old radio back in and just keep it looking tidy. the parcel shelf is being replaced in mine and taking speakers out so it looks tidier
