Hi Sandman, are you saying that crank has to be lifted to fit a new rear seal?

Correct mate. So whilst you're there you should be doing bearings too and whatever else you snowball into.

I have a vauge recollection that these old V8's had a rope type seal and mechanics of the day would repalce the seal using a wire puller of sorts while the engine was still within the vehicle... But as you're doing the car up and wanting to freshen the engine, i'd do it correctly and pull the motor and box out...

If your interested, a quick google search found this thread

Thanks guys, I thought some.. The dilemma I have is that engine runs beautiful I don't see a reason to fully rebuild it but I do agree that once I am there change few bits regardless. I took off the rocker cover and it looks really clean inside. Heads must have been done not long ago,Also I took off the dizzy and the alternator for a bit of a clean. Alternator is Oz made Bosh unit and so is the distributor. I always have faith on Oz build parts and I always rebuild them if possible.

Yep.
My HQ 253 had a rear main leak when I bought it. Been sitting in a 'barn' where I could 'find' it, so it dried out.
That was how the seal was first replaced, but it didn't fix the leak. When the engine came out for a freshen up, the rope seal was put in with the crank out and didn't leak after that. Same mechanic did the quick fix and the rebuild.

There are youtube videos on how to replace a rope seal on Holden V8. Simple to do, but has to be done correctly.

No worries, I guess the first thing is to take the box and engine out. Once its out I ll take the sump off and have a good look at it. Either way a quick freshen up is the best way forward. I got the call from Stan today, the quadrajet he's been building for me is done, one less thing to do!

Hi all, the distributor had some overspray from when they painted the block.. it was dirty and wiring was horrible.. all cleaned and freshened up, before and after, don't mind the tape.. just marking it so I know which way to put it back in. I've also made my own gasket.Screenshot_20200928_195352.jpg
