If you do shop around try an engine machinist shop. They tend to get decent prices on engine components.

Thank you all for your advice.

I am no expert on Holden's hehe that's why this forum is so great!

Off course that driveability has to be there plus the sound.

I spoke to Crow cams, I was advised the best would be to go with 5761 cam.

Specs

https://www.crowcams.com.au/ShopbyProduct/tabid/92/ProdID/15522/5761__HOLDEN_V8_HYDRAULIC.aspx
"Needs headers, carbie & ignition. (See Fitting Notes 1 & 2)
Fitting Notes:
1. Must use Performance Springs.
2. Must use Performance Retainers.

Crow Cams will tell you that the best thing to buy is what they want to sell you.
A good experienced engine builder will ask you questions and then tell you what is best suited to the answers you gave him.

my silver VK runs a big cam, almost undriveable under 2,000 rpm with a 7,000rpm limit, go big , sound frikken cool idling around, with a 5 speed and 4.11s in the back its easy to drive in traffic, 528 valve lift, with a good balance, some stock 4340 rods, a nice light steel flywheel, cool fun to drive
lots of camshaft shops in NZ, specializing in old 253-308 camshafts, Marsh motors is another guru on these motors

Hi all, after some research and consulting with crow cams, I've decided to go with 5666 cam. This is what they call a hot rod cam and it will be more drivable but still make the sound that I want. This cam needs the performance lifters, springs, retainers etc so instead of paying $1200 at crow I got it through eBay for $750 ... in website shows rpm 1700- 4700 but I did find out that in 253 it's more like 2200-5200 rpm which is perfect.

I have a crow 666 cam here for a holden 6cyl and reading the specs of it and comparing them to the specs of your V8 one, the rev range would be the 1 700 to 4700 range. The 6cyl one is 1,900RPM to 4,800 rpm and is classed as a gas cam

Here's the specs of a 6cyl 666 cam from the crow cam site

https://www.crowcams.com.au/ShopbyProduct/tabid/92/ProdID/15456/35666__HOLDEN_6_CAM.aspx

Here's the specs of your V8 666 cam from ebay

https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Crow-56...140039?hash=item25fc630e07:g:OEoAAOSw8S9a7-C3

I'll leave you compare and decide if you were told porkies or not

Here's the specs of the 6 cyl 665 cam I bought Monday...The rev range is more like the rev range you are expecting from your 666 cam

Great advise mate,I've just emailed the eBay seller, this is the one I got, 5666 for a V8, it does say duel gas pattern on the bottom of the add, it didn't say anything about lpg on adds description... Let's hope it will run on petrol too.... Worse case I do a swap, the seller has great reviews... The story continues..

Ok, got in touch with the builder and the camshaft seller.

I've decided to go back to original plan and go with 5761 cam and accessories that are required for it.

Ebay seller is more then happy to swap it, also he said it is a very popular cam for 253/308's

I've had a chat with a mechanic that I know from years ago, he is the one who will run it all in.

He said be careful that springs are not too heavy for the cam and he's seen it damage the cam before.

So I've checked with Crow cams and they said, they are not but it is very important that springs must be

1.7 inches from the spring seat, from back of the head to underneath the back of the retainer.

He also said I am happy to assist the engine builder and the mechanic if need to, before the engine fires up.

Aggressive street cam, great RPM range, lumpy idle, needs headers, carbie & ignition.

Power range 2700-6000 RPM.
