Check the service books.
It could be possible though, as believe it or not my VE purchased new by me has not quite done 40,000 kms, with every correct thing having been done to it in just over eight years documented in the service books.

I haven't bought it yet. Going to see it today. Private owner, first owner. Wants 10k, but happy to take 8.9K. Thanks for your comments.

Wouldn't a background check show a consistent odometer reading at every WOF?

For that money and if service history is good it would be a good buy.

Do a REVS or PPSR check on the vehicle. This will let you know if it is the correct kilometres for it, if it has ever been in an accident, any finance owing on it, or if it's on the WOVR etc etc etc.

There are still a few older low kilometre cars around if you look hard enough and put some time and effort into searching for them.
My VZ 1 Tonner is a perfect example.
I bought it in January 2013 with just 47,800 km's on it, it was a genuine one owner vehicle with full service history.
And as of this weekend just gone, it's now just ticked over 55,000 km's
