I think it might be this to do with cam phasing. My 2009 SV6 makes this exact noise on cold starts in winter and has done for the last 150,000kms (about 5-6 years). It’s now got 307,000kms on it. The chain has never been changed, it throws no codes, no issues with the running of the engine and still runs perfectly, just this noise on cold starts.
If it was tensioners surely they would have failed or gotten worse over the last 150,000kms but no. It’s still exactly the same noise for the same duration 150,000kms later.
