Just to clarify any doubt of my comment of Brake Lights & Ignition Switch,
where the Brake Lights do not operate when the ignition is in the off position in my car.
I just replaced the RH Brake Light globe,
And tested it to confirm it works.

What I always do, is grab a Painters Pole and place it on the Brake Pedal and against the Seat,
Either Car is running, or the Ignition Switch is just in the on position,
As per images -
Image 3975 - Painters Pole in place
Image 3978 - Painters Pole in place & Ignition switch on

I personally can't see why you'd want to have your brake lights illuminate with the ignition off....How often does one drive with the ignition off to worry about a car behind hitting you because your brake lights didn't illuminate?

Not sure about my VY, but the other 8 cars I own don't have the brake light illuminate with the ignition off

I was keeping a record at one stage myself,
But I lost interest after the first couple of box's of globes,
I was buying the cheap one's,
and then got them from a guy in Ferntree Gully [Bright Light Auto Parts],
And his lasted a bit longer,
But, I am now trying Narva Globes, seeing how long these will last [the one I just replaced today was a eBay special ]

Yes I agree,
but I am relieved, that I am not alone as the OP has the same thing,
as I thought,
Is my Car Different,o_O
or is it just me, not knowing my car properly :D.

Are the roads that you commonly driving on corrugated? Vibration and jarring will shorten the life of incandescent bulbS, particularly if they are on when being vibrated or jarred. Jarring from speed humps can cause bulbs to blow, so it’s usually a good idea to do all the braking before the speed humps, and be off the brakes while riding over it.

I used to have the centre brake light go fairly often on my VX wagon. Part of the problem was that I had my foot on the brake while someone else was (slam) closing the rear hatch. After a few bulbs I quickly figured out what was happening.

No corrugated roads,
and yes always brake before speed bumps,
as all the gear in the back would hit the roof lining, [only gagging] but it does thump some times, but never fast over speed humps,
My driving is mainly on sealed roads,
I did notice the terminals were a bit black in the light fitting, and I cleaned them up with a bit of Wet & Dry.

Easiest way to check, without using a stick.
Wait till its dark, foot on brake pedal, lamps illuminate, no ignition on.
Just checked a 2010 Corolla, same thing, no ignition on...
