Hi all, just wanted to talk about my ABS and Traction Control on my 2006 VE Omega. I drive it about 160km per day to and from work, about 8-9 months ago I lost my traction control and ABS, the lights came on and the messages appeared when starting the car. I wasn't too bothered about paying holden the $500+ they wanted to fix it, and I didn't have time to take it in so I let it go and got used to driving it without these features...

My girlfriends parents live on a farm, so you have to travel over a man made ford (not the car, the water crossing!) and dirt. I remember the weeks leading up to losing my ABS there was heavy rain, so the dirt roads lifted a lot of mud and cow ****. So due to this, I self diagnosed it as being a wheel sensor being dirty or something, but due to my inexperience with cars and braking systems, I never checked in fear I'd take something off, and not be able to put it back together correctly.

Yesterday, on my way to work I got a nice surprise, my dash seemed clear of errors. I figured this in itself was an error, as my cars computer has crashed and been wierd before (Audio controls not working and such)... I got to work, turned my car off, then back on. Check engine flashed breifly and then cleared once started. I let it go for the day and checked again after lunch, check engine showed again but all seemed good. On my way home, it started fine with no check engine... I done ABS test at 60km/h and it worked fine, although, I should have removed my phone from the passenger seat, but luckily it survived.

I think I may have had mud and dirt in the ABS sensor and due to recent rain it may have washed out. I think this is an important first step for anyone with ABS and Traction control on this car, particuarly if driving on dirt roads is to check and clean the sensors... I hope this is the issue but the way things are going, I'm pretty happy. I was hoping someone on this forum with a bit of time and a VE commodore can maybe make some instructions with pictures on checking the sensors.

Thanks.

How do you get used to driving without safety features?
Not having a go, just wondering what you say to yourself for reassurance over that 9 months when you see ABS and Traction Control is no longer working on your car and yet you drive it 160km a day?
I realise Holden wants to take as much out of your wallet as possible (whats new), but since you are out of warranty anyway what stops you from going to brake specialist and getting things checked out?
Holden isn't the only place to get your car looked at, but dude.... there is no way I could drive a car almost 1000km a week for 9 months knowing very important safety features arent working as they should. No way.
Even at worst case scenario handing over $500 to Holden, dont you think its worth it?
No way your reaction time and driving skill can beat a computer.

I had the same problem, Holden replaced the ABS wire harness under warranty. Do issues with the problem anymore.

My VE Clubsport 1st flashed up ABS Light/ESP off with the chimes sounding a few years ago at approx 90,000km after diving for about 90mins and stayed on until I reached my destination. Upon restart it went through the same warning routine however after about minute of driving the ABS and ESP error disappeared from the dashboard. This was an intermittent event for the next 6 months probably happening 3 to 4 more times after which I checked out the forums and tried cleaning the rear wheel speed sensors and rear connector plugs (very simple to do on the VE). No problem until recently. At close to 230,000 last week (a couple of days after we had extremely high rainfall) it happened again. After restart however it would not reset. After battery disconnect/reconnect it still did not reset. I again cleaned the rear wheel speed sensors and rear connection plugs (was going to clean front wheel speed sensors but a lot trickier to remove the sensors so just the front connector plugs only). Took it for a run and that didn't solve the problem. (Unfortunately it appears as though the car must travel a certain distance before the computers give the ok so just having it on stands and starting it isn't sufficient so wheels have to back on.) I had purchased a rear wiring loom for the rear wheel speed sensors back at the 90,000 as it was common problem that given the wiring positions of the loom there is continual movement bending/flexing the wires but back then cleaning the sensors solved it so onto to shelf it went. Upon inspecting the connection point (attached to underbody approximately under rear right passenger seat) I noted that one of the four wires on the rear loom side of the plug was separated (it looked like it may have shorted). I connected the replacement wiring loom a few days ago and after about 20 starts the issue seems to be resolved.

I actually own a Tech 2 and an MDI. I have two VE Commodores (V8 & V6)........... both prone to such things. The most common problem you get with Holdens ABS Issues is failing wheel speed sensors...... they cost like $55 on ebay. Problem is you need a tech 2 to see which one is playing up........ it can be caused by grime, but they are plastic...... we just replace them everytime they play up. If you ever drive through flood waters or mud etc, it will kill them. I've heard some commodores the wiring harness to the speed sensor can need replacing......... but so far we've just replaced the sensors and they've been fine, the front ones are the full wheel hub.......... not hard to change.....

My partners car has strange issues, hers is the 3.0 series 2....... no sensor issue just a abs glitch that causes things to go off......... car stumbles a bit into a drive and bang abs etc goes........ hasn't done it in ages, it's either her last sensor we haven't replaced or just a wiring issue somewhere, only seems to happen when I drive it which is virtually never....... I'm much heavier then her so who knows maybe with my weight it pinches a wire somewhere.

Either way......... you got to have ABS and Stability Control. It's not safe without it. Not worth risking driving a car with it not working.
