I have a 2006 ve berlina and the engine light comes on everytime i start the car, Iv been told by holden the timing chain is stretched. The light has been on for around a year and the car still runs fine no noises or anything. I think there is a little lack of power because of the light coming on but still runs good. My question is should i get the car fixed or just keep driving it?
It was/is a known issue and should be fixed under warranty. If your warranty has run out it's an expensive fix. Regarding the long term damage I have no idea but I can't imagine it would be good to drive it with such a fault! How can you drive it around with a known issue and the engine light on for a year and not be worried?
yeah it has no warranty and ive been qouted $3200 to fix it, it would probably cost just as much to put in another used engine?. Well it still drives ok
As it's a known GMH issue, surely a NICE word with them should have it attended to at N/C or close to. Of course there other legal avenues a swell. By why in Gods name would you keep driving any vehicle when a warning light shines in your face?
Maybe because he doesn't want to bend over and get reamed 3k to fix holdens defective engine !! Certainly sounds like a stubborn move and its possibly going to end in tears. If the chain was loose though wouldn't it be noisy by now ? You could be a lucky man and just have a stuffed sensor ...
Stuff it, assuming it's stuffed, and assuming you need to replace engine, just use it till won't go anymore, then get another engine Though this is a common fault, so it's dicky sensors, just because the code means stretched chain? Use it till she dies I would
I wouldn except that it's chain rooted! If if drives fine makes no noise, doesn affect how it operates then don't worry, Holden puts these faults on here to make people get headf@&$Ed and spend money at dealer, I am not a mechanic but I would think most cars have a stretch just don't have fault code to indicate it, my opinion keep driving as per normal
Have you tried looking at the fault on a scan tool, and erasing it?? If it's just a sensor, could be Just a stored fault
Yeah ive had the code erased a few times it comes back up when i put my foot down hard or when it reaches bout 70-80kmh then stays on.

The sensor is easy to change. See if it's that first. Otherwise if not then you're up for a major timing chain replacement. Don't just quote Holden for the job. Other auto workshops can do it for a lot cheaper. Sooner you fix it the better. I let mine to the point it started damaging the guides as well. You won't like broken fragments flowing & blocking the oil passages in your engine, very bad.
When the chain stretches it brings up a code for cam phasing. The sensors are working correctly and are picking up the difference in timing between the cams and the crank. The chains won't neccessarily make any noise when this happens. But yes it will feel a little low on power due to the timing issue.
Clear the code drive it over to your nearest Holden dealer (not the one that's cleared the codes) and trade it in  on one with a warranty, they made the dodgy shiz can deal with it.
haha i like your thinking, but the service history would be on holdens database, best of getting the code cleared privately
Just thought id add to this thread, have recently bought a ve omega 06 with 90,000 on it, and although it drove well, found the check engine light came on after a few weeks, at the same time noticing a slight rattle in the engine. Went through all the scan tool, oil sensor process to get to the bottom of it, only to find out that the timing chain is stretched and that this is a common problem in in late vz`s , early ve`s. have been advised that im better off getting a new engine as the stretched timing chain could have done other damage, the cost is $4000 for an engine with 50,000 on it, which isnt too bad considering i paid $10,000 for the vehicle, so im still around market value, if id paid $14,000 id be out for blood!, apparently they used a thinner timing chain but rectified this in 09. For a timing chain to stretch after 90,000 kms is rediculous, but buyer beware i suppose.
