Ve Experimental engine?

Hi everyone, I'm new here so forgive me if I'm asking something already discussed.
My girlfriend's son in law has a VE 3.6 SIDI.
Apparently it's done a timing chain.
He was told that his car has an "experimental engine " and any old 3.6 won't work in the car.
Is this possible, or even true?
Or has someone spun him a line, knowing that he knows sweet FA about cars?

The SIDI engines are different to the first generations of Alloytecs that were put into the Commodores.

But they're far from experimental with plenty of parts or outright replacement units available.

There were two SIDI engines released. A 3.6 and a 3.0 litre.

Any 3.6 SIDI motor will work.

It was the series 1.5 that had the SIDI 3.6.
An intermediate update prior to the series 2 release.
