Hey everyone I just have a quick question about an oil change I’m about to do on my ve omega. Is there much difference between 5w/30 oil and 10w/30 oil, my cars done 140,000kms, would the 5w/30 oil be to thin for the age of the motor or would it make no difference. The last oil change I used 10w/30, it’s just that there’s a really good special on the 5w/30 oil at the moment for the same brand I use, castrol magnatec

Not a lot of difference but best to use 5/30 until your car starts using Oil which is probably years away.

There's more to oil than just viscosity. The oil classification also tells you about the oil's temperature capability, service life, shear characteristics, compatibility with emissions devices etc.

It's like buying food based purely on how much fibre content it has. It's a good start, but you'll miss out on other important things if you don't understand.

5W-30 - I’m still using it in the Minister for Finance and Treasuries car that’s got over 170k - as has been said, continue to use it until it stars burning oil, then upgrade to a thicker viscosity

If it's a quality 5w30 it should be ok but a 5w40 would be better if you do a lot of hard driving in hot weather

Have you read your books?
5-30 or 10-30 is what it tells you to use.

Me? yes I have. It tells you that 5W40 is perfectly suited to use in all weather, and better than 30 grade oil in hot weather.
