Hi fellow commie life members, I’m having trouble with my sisters 2006 ve sv6 6 speed, it was overheating and when it did the battery would act like it’s dead but at first the battery was the only thing that was noticed, then it was figured out that it was actually overheating and then the battery would act like it’s dead and even try to slowly crank the motor although the battery was fine, so I changed the thermostat housing because I figured it must have had a bad thermostat, (I also fully cleaned the back of the motor were the housing bolts on and used gasket sealant) and it also got new coolant and top and bottom rad hoses, so it started up and we were trying to bleed the system with the radiator cap off and I seen a few bubbles pop out over around 10 or 15 minutes but then it kept overflowing instead of circulating so I put the cap on and went for the test drive, it had its power there but it was also shuddering and just not running/idling right, and then the temp gauge went up to half way while sitting (sis was in the shop) so we took it back and on the way back the temp did seem to move back down while it was driving but sitting in the driveway it went back up to halfway so we turned it off and to check the battery phenomenon tried to start it again and it only slowly cranked the motor like a fully dead battery but was all good beforehand, just really hoping that someone knows what’s going wrong and can point me in the right direction, it seems like all work that’s been done has not made a difference so it must be something else, starting to get desperate and thanks heaps in advance for any help

Bleed the air using a container or specialised bucket attached to the filler. Other methods will not remove air locks or trapped air enough.

Good idea to replace the coolant sensor ($30) while the system is open (seeing how you replaced the thermostat), and what a job that must have been, so hat off to you for that.

The battery might be another issue. Voltage might be good but get it load tested.

So I should put something under the filler to catch the coolant and just keep trying to bleed it? And yea man it sure was a task and a half

Are your fans coming on when the engine is hot? Does your low speed fan come on when you turn on the A/C?

I’m not sure about the low speed fan but the thermo fans do kick in when it gets hot

Don't forget the little finger size hose on top of the radiator that points forwards is there to bleed air out as well. It needs to be warm enough to build a little bit of pressure in the hoses for that to work. Just don't try it after a 2 hour drive and spray boiling water everywhere.
