I've said this elsewhere... There is a reason Holden did it and it wasn't a mistake. It was done in an effort to reduce NVH levels in the car. With that being said... Do the swap as its well worth the effort.

I'm really struggling to get the pins out of the connector, perhaps the connector got changed in the S2's?

If its the pins off the subs that you are talking about, they are soldered on.

Its 10x easier to just swap the polarity at the speaker. Just jump in the boot with a solder gun, you can even do it from the middle of the back seats. It literally took me 2 mins.

I thought I'd give it another shot, soldering this time. Not heaps confident soldering, especially upside down. Is there anyway to take the cover off the subs on the parcel shelf and take them out?

No mate, to get them out you need to remove the back seat etc. it's not very difficult to do but it is much easier to just solder from in the boot. May be stating the obvious, but the main trick with soldering is to use the soldering iron to heat the metal terminals/wire (not directly onto the solder). When the metal terminal is hot enough the solder just flows or will be sucked onto it.

Be careful that your face is not directly below and that you also have something to protect the carpet if there is a drip.
