Hey all,
I have a ve which I suspect it could be one or both my rear wheel bearings are gone as they give a loud humming noise and it gets louder the faster you go.
I thought it was the front ones so I've changed them but it wasn't.

I've also had other people tell me.it could be the diff or the tread on the tyres which have split or separated.

Here's a video of me on the freeway doing 100 and you can hear the loud humming sound other then the road sound.

What could it be ?

If I were to guess? Sounds like tyre noise.
To eliminate that, you could put your spare on & go for a drive then swap sides.

Try and loan a different set of wheels and put them on the back first. Easiest and cheapest.

How many K's has it done ?
anything above 180,000's
I would suspect it being the diff, as a starting point,
however, its a bit hard with not being in the actual car.
First check the diff oil, and see if there is any in it, and what colour it is, if it is a metallic, this might be part of the problem.
But that also depends upon who has driven it, and how it was driven, from the previous owner/s.

I'm the 2nd owner to the car and the noise was never there. Did come up around middle of last year.

Car has done 295xxx km so I might have to check the diff oil.

I do have a spare set of stock ve wheels i can chuck on and see if that noise is eliminated.

Ah,yeah, might be wise to check considering many would say diff oil should be changed more frequently that Holden suggest. Some say diff and trans oils should be changed at 50k to 80k kms intervals. When was it last done?

Ps: check the oils but if Tyre tread is low get new tyres ;)

Try loading up each wheel bearing by slowly swerving left to right to see if the noise changes. If it does then it’s a bearing. If not look elsewhere like diff or tyre noise.

Since you said that if I swirve left the noise goes away but if I swirve right, the noise is still there

I changed over my wheels to a spare set and the sound is there there so I can rule out it's my tyres

Try a bearing on the rear left and see if it gets you out of trouble.
Are they a PITA to fit like the previous generation IRS cars?
