Correct.
I was told by a trans specialist years ago that fitting a cooler in front of the radiator, while bypassing the factory cooler could cause the engine to overheat. Due to less airflow and the introduction of a large heat sync in front of the radiator. That was on my VH S/LE. Of course that wouldn't apply if the cooler was fitted elsewhere.
Where are the aftermarket trans coolers fitted on the VF's?

It would be a topic of discussion with HSV...
My Redline has the factory trans cooler in the radiator, and it seems to work well.
E3 Maloo bypasses the radiator all together, and uses a large external cooler in front of the radiator. It maintains trans temps much lower, usually 15-20 degrees lower.
Oh, the Maloo cooler is the same as fitted to the auto LE's.
Do the VF2 SS's and Redlines have an external cooler?

Yeah it would be different from one car to the next I assume. The VH didn't have a particularly big radiator.
Not sure about the VF2 Redlines?

You can buy coolers with a mounted fan and temp switch all built in, works mint.

These aren't an issue with long idle times or overcooling.

There is a recent thread on here with a v8 owner who had issues with the trans overheating when it was bypassed. He had done extensive upgrades on the trans some of which reduce slip and heat. The trans ended up slipping as it got too hot. He resolved the issue by running the fluid through the rad once again.

Possibly a poor choice of cooler, some work better than others..

I like the advice from "RiCeY" , a lot of horror stories of Ford Forums about the dreaded Milkshake, (coolant and Trans Oil mixing).

So running them in series.....would you simply splice into the rubber hoses from the hot and cold ports on the radiator. From there, with some fittings from Pirtek, run the external coolers piping, keeping the hot side and cold side in series also.

On the other hand....

The radiator thermo fans dont turn on until 105 degrees coolant temp.
My coolant temp sits between 90 - 95degrees, and may nudge the 100 when climbing up the freeway for 10 mins.
If my temp doesn't get near 105....does that mean that my fans very rarely are on?
And with that it has sufficient "air" flowing through the radiator. So would a complete stand alone trans cooler be the same principal?

that makes sense in my head......sorry if it doesn't.

Can anyone confirm what’s needed to add a oil cooler into the system while still using the factory unit
