Gday guys so today I put the battery in a battery box (the guys at the pits reckons it needs one because it’s in the cabin behind the passo seat) so I’ve disconnected the battery and got it into the box and back in place with a bit of convincing, now the car won’t start but all the electronics turn on and I’m getting an airbag fault, brake fault, stability control fault, abs fault and it’s saying the engine is immobilised. No bloody clue what’s going on or why

Firstly, it doesn’t need a battery box. The vehicle was designed that way. Get your assessment done elsewhere. It meets Australian standards as it is. Every ute owner isn’t suddenly getting defected or not passed at the pits.

What is important is the battery vent tubes are connected. They are a small clear pvc tube that goes into the side of the top of battery. There is a small hole there for that. It vents to the exterior of the cabin.

As for the car not starting there can be two causes.

One is a low voltage condition. The battery gets charged back to full voltage and everything sorts itself after the codes are cleared.

The second is the not fun one. When you reinstalled the battery, positive terminal first, then negative terminal. If the ratchet or spanner accidentally touches something when it’s done the other way around, a spark can happen and things go south quickly. Or install the battery positive last can cause small voltage spikes that damage modules. It’s just not worth the risk.

The various modules throughout the cars computer network are not tolerant of a whoopsie daisy like that. Once that has happened finding the fault is one a needle in a haystack.

Go through and physically test each fuse with a multimeter.

Make sure the fusible links on the positive terminal are good with a multimeter.

Get the battery charged up. If you do t have a charger, buy one, they are very handy to have for a VE owner.

Once it’s charged, have the battery load tested and its state of health tested. (How much it can do and hold v when it was new)

Say ole mate has the earth on hits the body with the spanner while doing up the positive how does that damage the electronics of the car? Its only shorting out the battery. How goes it damage the cars electronics? Ive seen blokes do that and burn themselves.

Voltage spike, voltage briefly going the wrong way around for just a millisecond can damage sensitive diodes and transistors in circuit boards. They are not going to be keen on that. How do you even begin to find which transistor has cooked, on which board, in which module on the network. It’s doable but not by many.

Just the same as recently in a thread the discussion on getting a relay in the wrong way will do similar.

Back in the day, yeah, mattered little. We didn’t have cars loaded with computers.

You can electronically write off a car with a single mistake. It just is not worth the risk or headache.

Negative goes on last.

What damage actually happens why does it happen if there is no parth for the current how can shorting the battery do damage? How can a direct short to earth make a voltage spike?
get the battery polarity wrong will cause the nightmare Fu is speaking off putting the negitive on first and welding the spanner to the body while tightening up the positive can burn down the car Im not saying Fu is wrong just interested how it could create a spike. Main reason I ask is it pisses me off watching some emergency service blokes struggle to disconnect the battery on a crashed car Id like to give them the cutters to cut one of the cables off the battery.
