I have a 2011 ve ssv s2 with the L77 and 6l80 6-speed auto.
Have been noticing some flare between gear changes (mainly 2nd-3rd for a while, not drastic but noticeable.
Recently noticed trans fluid in my radiator (most likely unrelated) turned out the trans cooler on the radiator had let go which filled the cooling system with trans milkshake. Completely flushed the system several times over, replaced radiator and all hoses, flushed the system another seven times until all clear.
Then topped up the trans (correctly) untill it over-flowed expecting to see a milk shake in there but surprisingly enough the fluid in the trans was pretty clear.
Naturally I thought the initial gear flaring was caused by the gradual loss of trans fluid so was hoping that once I filled trans back up (lost about 2litres) it would be operating well again.
Unfortunately Gears still flare and now it’s having a hesitant start in drive. It starts moving then stops and immediately jumps back into gear.
Have spoken to several mechanics and only advice I get is rebuild or replace, have also spoken to several auto specialists and a couple said this particular transmission (1CVA) was prone to a crack in the drum internally and can often be repaired reasonably cheaply. Which leads me to my 2 questions;

*has anyone out there had a similar issue with there 6-speed 6L80 (1CVA) and did an inexpensive repair solve it?

*if I am up for another gearbox can I pair a different 6L80 6-speed (with a different sticker code on the side) to my L77 6.0 without too much issue? I’ve spoke with Holden and they won’t touch anything that isn’t an exact match to the car/engine but have been told it’s more then possible to do so by a few people, a couple people on here said it’s easy enough as well.
Really appreciate picking anyone’s brains on this subject before I go and shell out 6k for a rebuild or replace.
Cheers

If you can find yourself another 1CVA or another #CVA with low Ks then use that, the only thing you will have to so is use your TCM from your transmission as its coded to your car.

There is a list of transmissions that will fit your car, keep in mind that everything is forwards compatible not backwards compatible due to operating systems so for example I replaced my 2CVA for a 4CVA but still had to use my TCM for it to work, at the end of the day I should of done a rebuild though.

Ok cheers. There are a few different CVA trans available close to me so I might go down that path. I’m assuming the TCM is located inside the trans? If so is it something relatively easy to swap out before Re installation?

VEGTS BUILT BLOWN E85
that 2-3 flare is sometimes related to a clutch air purge, there was a thing on it with the US 6 speeds and its normal dosnt cause any issues, this is if its only on the first shift after starting up and taking off then after that it shouldnt do it whilst ur driving around, but if its doing it every 2-3 shift then its prob worn clutches, if ur oil is still red then u should be fine but if its getting dark then its clutch material in it

Rebuild = $5,5k [depends where you get it done],
But get it done properly !
I know, been there, done that,

Wasn't going to waste my time, and most off all my money with a secondhand one, someone else wanted to sell with a fault, and pass it/fault on to another SUCKER,
that I then would have to pay for.

Yes it was costly,
But, it drives like new ! at 220,000 k/s
And will possibly last another 200,000 k/s.

07 VE SV6
Heya guys, not SS related but trans related.. Been trying to find a post that’s somewhat recent this is the first I found so far..

My 07 SV6 Trans Cooler line somehow has managed to come off. Tow trucked it home to be safe so I could investigate properly. Turns out the retainer clip that holds it on is no where to be found, that one test run after timing chain nearly cost me a fortune. Can only seem to find them on eBay at 2 for $33 or wait for 2+ weeks and get an 18 pack from China for $18 or something like that. Has anyone used or found an alternative at all? I’m really keen to actually drive the old girl.

Before anyone asks, yes the retainer clip was on properly as I triple checked everything prior to even starting the car and the old boy being a rev head himself checked it all over while he thought I wasn’t looking.. Was just one of those freak things I guess..

Between ordering everything and not receiving everything I needed, getting short changed by vendors/sellers it’s been just shy of 3months give or take to get it running again. Not to mention it was a good solid month before I could afford to buy all I needed to do it all. So it’ll definitely be great to finally drive it again and not have to walk to work everyday for once haha.

Any opinions or suggestions would be greatly appreciated and would help a lot.
