Can understand a thicker wheel being nicer to drive but what is the point of the flat bottom other than to get your gut under it easier!

thigh clearance more so than gut - unless you lay on your back to drive...

Shearing the base flat lets the wheel be elliptical rather than round - so they can still use the same centres across the range but the wheel itself is slightly smaller to use.

The wheel isn't just a flat bottom, is is thicker and chunkier than the stock wheel.
