hi there just a few questions about the diff gears I’m hoping someone can help me with .

I have a vf ss storm Ute got the usual mods otr exhaust ,woild Like to know what’s the best gear ratio to go with , it’s an auto and will be getting cammed down the track.

ive seen people talk about 3.7 3.9 and 4.11
I have no idea as it’s hard to find out info and also do you just change the gears in the original diff or do I need to get a whole new differential

cheers fellas

I just upgraded my 2.92 to 3.45 and glad I didn’t go any higher ratio than that

Also I changed the whole diff, and my Calais was a single spinner so upgraded to LSD.

If you have an auto, then a "relatively" easy upgrade is a manual diff, and swap the entire thing.

3:45 is where I went in my auto, also glad I didn’t go shorter.
If the budget allows it’s a good time to whack a truetrac in there too.

It did make a difference off the line and mid range acceleration, however (and I appreciate this next comment may be ridiculed) I installed a throttle controller for shits and giggles over the weekend, I notice more down low out of that than the shorter diff gears.
The faster opening throttle body gives better low down than the diff.

I think coming from 2.92, you'd roughly increase wheel torque by 10% with 3.27, 15% with 3.45 and 25% with 3.7.

Ok mate thanks for that, you think I’d be ok to just change the gears for now as I would rather save the money for a cam package first before getting a whole new diff , and best gears to suit my car would be 3.27 or just go abit more ?
Cheers

Save money for a cam, do you know how much changing diff gears costs?
