    2013 ssv manual ute
My missus is gonna buy a new car and today she test drove a new ssv redline manual, they didn't have an ssv manual ( what she is looking at buying) available to drive.
We then went and drove a new my 2015 wrx manual premium then the auto.
She loved the spaciousness and comfort, minimum road noise and power of the redline.
She came back grinning! I refrained from going with her on the drive.
She was afraid that the clutch might be too heavy for her and the gears difficult to change, but came away knocked out by how easy it was to drive!
We then went and drove the subaru's, this time I went in the car and took my turn driving both.
The auto Subaru scared her when I egged her on to hammer it from a low speed rolling start, I can attest to the fact that it absolutely hauls ass and feels razor shap in its handling!
She loved the Subaru, preferring the manual.
She has owned a Subaru imprezza for nearly ten years, it has nearly 300k on the clock and still runs like dream and is still tight and trim like a new one, no saggy seats, worn out door seals or anything. Never had a whisker of trouble with it, it's been perfect.
Given her personality, I think she will be very disappointed and very unforgiving of any defects and problems with whatever she decides to buy.
She may get a shock at how soon she might need new tires on the Holden and just how much they cost, plus she might get a shock at the petrol pump.
We were both leaning heavily towards the Subaru after the test drive but went back to the holden dealer and sat in the ssv again and were immediately struck by its spaciousness comfort and bling factor compared to the suby.
    Genuine dilemma here!
Please feel free to give me your honest opinion. Would especially love to hear from anyone with experience with Subaru , even the older ones as this new one is all new and quite a leap forward apparently , and with the new vf holden's .
Don't hold back, I wanna hear the arguments.
For my own part, I have not driven a v8 ever or ridden in a vf ssv, but I'm taking delivery of a new ssv manual ute next sat. But to me that Subaru was phenomenal , even despite the smaller interior and stiff sports car like ride ( I actually really loved that stiff race car sort of feel)

The new WRX's are very quick and very reliable and TBH unless you have your heart set on a V8 the Subaru would be the better buy. I just got a VE SSV and i love it to pieces, especially how quiet and comfortable it is but there are certain issues like Piston slap and the stock stereo sound quality that bug me. However i learn to live with those issues as i just love the way a V8 delivers its power and the fat torque curve. Also the fuel consumption on the SSV is actually very impressive for a V8, i average around 13L/100.

Drive the SSV in auto and manual then decide. It's gonna be your missus car but your asking the q's here. I wouldn't buy anything prior to testing. including your ute.

Me I've driven a lot of Subbies, and my Father still owns a relatively new one. I wouldn't rate a Rex as even coming close to a VF SSV, much less a Redline as a daily driver. Forget about the two cars and ask your selves the question: What type of car do we want and want will we use it for? They are so different the only comparison is on their performance. I'm not even sure why anyone would consider comparing these two cars for purchase other than go factor They are chalk and chees, and therefore it should be a very easy decision. It's kind of like asking Hmmm should I buy the 6.3AMG or the Lotus?

I have 3 V8s, 5.7LS1, 6.0LS2, and Toyota quad cam 32 valve, but I love my Subaru Outback 3.0 6cyl. Would have a WRX 2moro if I could. As you said, my Subie seats at 160,000ks are still as new compared with all of our Holdens seats that are stuffed way too early for my liking.
My Subie is very comfortable on a trip as well, no rattles etc on road either.
IMHO, if you are getting a V8 yourself, get the missus the WRX:smoking:

What in particular makes you rate the SSV so far ahead of a WRX? When it comes to fit and finish, reliability and general build quality the Subaru is by far the better car and im a Holden guy.

Good stuff lads thanks! The missus wants a car with some get up and go. We both rate Subaru build quality higher than Holden and I'm a Holden man.
It is hard to compare them, the ssv has grunt, plushness and comfort, the suby feels raw , rigid and sharp, I swear it would absolutely blow my old sv6 we'll away. I've never driven the 6 l v8, but I wouldn't mind betting the Subaru would give a stock ssv a fair run in the acceleration stakes.
We both found the suby to be fantastic fun to drive, she found the ssv to be easy to drive , super comfortable and very powerful.
I won't bag the Holden, it's her decision.
I would prefer she bought the suby since I will have the ssv ute, so we will j
Kind of have the best of both worlds.
She is reading your comments and taking them on board

I don't think cuda was actually rating the suby ahead of the vf, other than as a daily driver, which I guess is about the comfort thing, he seems to agree that both cars are about horsepower in their own different ways.
The seats and overall internal fit and feel in this new gen wrx is quite a bit better than the previous one though

In that case yeah i agree, the VF is the better daily driver. Even my VE SSV is so bloody comfortable and easy to drive.

If comfort and grunt are needed together, why not look at a 3.6 Subaru Liberty. 190kw, 350nm. Smooth as a babies bum:smoking:

I've owned a 97 WRX and an 03 Club Spec Evo 5 WRX and compared to my VE SS I had I'd rather the EVO 5 but when I compare it to my VF Redline it's simple I'd rather my Redline 7days a week and twice on Sundays.

The VF is a massive leap ahead on a VE it's laughable and everything the OP described about it bling wise is true and no way apart from how it goes will the WRX even come close. The features and gadgets in a VF is awesome.

In saying that I do have a Redline and the OP was talking about just an SSV so you miss some stuff but in the end do your research and as it's been said think about it good and proper before you hand over any cash.

She doesn't like the look of the liberty, it's a bit too sedate in her opinion.
This will most likely be the last car she ever buys, so she wants something she feels is special and she will likely keep it 10 years or probably more. It won't be doing anything like the kms of her old car , most likely less than 8 thousand a year.
This is a very emotional purchase for her as my new ute is for me, it will be my last, unless I win lotto and buy one of the last ones in 2016. She has pretty much narrowed it down to these two choices , although a Nissan 370 z was in the running but was too impractical and a bit too expensive.
We appreciate everyone's opinion and are taking it all on board. Thanks to everyone who posts.

I traded in my 06 WRX in July last year on a VF SSV manual. I had really debated about waiting for the new WRX model but had to get a new car for work. I found that the SSV had a great looking exterior and interior, and lots of bells and whistles as far as technology goes. It was also in the back of my mind that it was one of the last chances to own a rear wheel drive V8 (until I can afford an AMG C63 anyway) Getting the back out in a RWD after 7 years of owning an AWD was a great experience. ;)

Any friends that came for a ride always commented on its power over the WRX, but I know the Rex was quick, I guess it was just the sound of an extra 4 cylinders giving it that appearance.
Also when I went fast in the Rex I always knew it because it was screaming, however in the V8 you don't feel you are going that fast until you look at the speedo and realise it.

I don't know if any of this really helps. As I said I bought the car in July last year. If it was July this year I really don't know which way I would have gone.

They both have their positives and maybe a few negatives. Choose carefully and make a decision that you will only ever think about positively.

    Good luck!

Having torn both cars apart on the inside, I can say that while fit and finish of what you the end user looks and touches may be better in the Subaru... behind the scenes, the VF is the far more advanced car and technologically is leaps and bounds ahead of the WRX. If comfort with some grunt is what you want... the VF. If grunt with four wheels and a heater is what you desire.... the WRX

Google "nikki catsouras crash photos" if you want to see what a high powered car can do to a woman's sweet curves.

Yeah im very aware that the VF is a massive step up from a VE and it does have some cool gadgets ect but the actual build quality is not in the same class as the Subaru. I test drove a few VF SSV's and they still creak and rattle like every other Holden. I will concede that the VF interior actually feels very well made and the materials used are a big step up for a Holden but it still not quite there imo.

One other thing to perhaps consider. If she keeps cars for an extended period, this is probably her last chance to buy Aussie muscle.

HSV is Aussie muscle, not some suede covered shopping trolley. Go the WRX.
