VF2 Exhaust set up and tuning for the LS3

    Oh some reason I thought you had an auto. What year and confirm trans type ideally Stock OS number and version. File is stock?
    I'd check out 2014 (L77) manual values because I think 2015 basically turned off DFCO coz noisy crackle splashing fuel on cat = racecar, check the CFCO too.
    Yes then just "copy with labels", of course make sure you select all, then "paste with labels".
    The other thing is spark on deceleration likely retarded to wazoo to make noise vs contribute to fuel economy, worth look at some point.
    EFIlive has a list of OS vs ECU compatibility but generally ECUs can't go forward, and there are two main revisions to Series I, of course Series II, and VF. Same ECU revision and generally you can flash the entire OS (after checking detailed version compatibility) or segments over. Means you can utilise the unseen calcs and tables because what we see is just navigating tip of iceberg.

    can be better to leave CFCO disabled also, if clutch is in then your not doing much decel so may as well keep it all ready for the next gear engagement and not start to cut fuel, also for track racing it can be better to have some decel enrichment (MAT goes up when in decel might be more boost related) so ill be having mine delay fuel cut above a desired rpm so if im on the streets its normal but if im round a track say above 4k then it will stay at stoich fueling help the engine stay cooler inside

    Mate I also have a cam, so can't quote power figures from just the exhaust system, but I can say it sounds bloody awesome

    I've been trying to decide between the harrop pro extreme 3" or difillipo. I think I'm going to get the harrop with otr and tune.

    Can't comment on the difillipo system, but can say, I am really happy with the harrop system and also how it is put together, and how it sounds, I also like the carbon tips!

    Can I just say in response to monstar's earlier comment about tuners, they are running a business. It's not commercially viable to spend 5 years tailoring and perfecting a tune to suit each individual. Just like an exhaust, tune or build something that suits 95% of the market, it works. If someone has the time to develop their own tunes or exhausts or disco lights to get exactly what they want, that's all part of building your car, but for the most part, people either don't have the time, or skill to do their own work, or have the money to pay someone to fully customise their car. It's great to be able to do your own tuning, but to say that "tuners" don't know how to tune properly is not really fair. A business survives and is successful by making money, they can't make money by spending 3 days on one car and charging $400.

    My personal experience with one particular tuner here in WA is similar to your guy on the Gold Coast, monstar. He tunes because he loves it and knows what he is doing. He probably spends more time than is "profitable" on each car, but the end result is very good. He has 3 or 4 guys doing the mechanical work, and I think a couple of them even tune, but Justin is that kind of rare tuner that just "gets it". If you are lucky enough to have him tune your car, you know you're getting a good tune and not just a copy and paste.

    BTW, that Harrop system looks great, I haven't heard one but it looks like it would be good. Apart from the bimodal crap, I have never liked the fact that there is a butterfly in the flow of the exhaust.

    Guys here's a vid of my MSE with a 3" Difilippo setup, more detail at the link.
    Abbafan, as an "exhaust guru" how do you rate this setup vs others you've heard for the LS3?
    Have to say I love the deep sound not to mention the extra power (300kw at the wheels). With that said, at the top half of the rev range the speed is too much for the street IMO, it's very easy to get in trouble.

    On the flip side, most tuners charge around 1 grand for a decent tune, and some can't even get it anywhere near 95% right.

    Mine's been back to the tuner 3 times now, and is still a dog's breakfast as far as drivability and other issues go. When you spend upwards of 20 grand on mods (which is what the car yard spent on supercharger/cam/exhaust on this car), I don't think it's too much to have reasonably high expectations.

    I agree. Some tuners do struggle, they have read a book and know how to use FB so all of a sudden they are a tuner. I contemplated doing it, I have tuned a Haltec in a turbo Gemini but I only tweaked it to get it running better. I'm not going to say I'm a tuner if I'm not properly trained. Too much I don't know about tuning to start offering that service.

    It's not fair to call out the 95% of Tuners as offering basic tweaks, flashing canned tunes, because we should support these people who need to make a living, and you can't make a living actually tuning properly. OK got that.
    On the flip side also not fair that customers think a tune like this costs $400 / $800 (same thing bundled with $500 CAI for $1300) / $1000 (same thing run on rollers with chart). It's all the same sleight-of-hand, quick fix.
    I think a proper tune would include an hour interview / street consult @ $100 then ten accountable hours (detail report on what done and why) @ $150 total $1600, and come with a lifetime service level agreement that honours the OEM warranty / future bolt-on upgrades.
    The value gap between $400 remote tune and $1600 proper custom tune would not compare easily using the usual one trick all-encompassing hp peak to describe the tune that unfortunately it has come down to. Rather in superior operational detail with torquey yet smooth transitions matches to transmission, low idle with comprehensive engine and drivetrain protection in place, cool running near thermostat and Brake Standard Fuel Consumption close to 0.50. Basically a smooth running, efficient, torque balanced result calibrated to driver and car.
    Sadly nobody pays $1600 tune only, at least not without a snazzy logo LOL!
    Sure if you bundle canned tune as a branded meal deal (bolt-ons and a conditional insurance policy) sky is the limit like >$2500 for the tune component. So logo, meal deal (and of course as you know sound) is demonstrably more effective at opening a wallet than a properly tuned honest result.
    Re EFI training for commercial competency vs customised or personal proficiency, seems after a basic understanding of mechanics (not certified) the critical success factor is a good intermediate working knowledge of modern EFI principles (certified or otherwise).
    I think a technician can be trained to a good level of commercial competency, whereas good mathematic / scientific analysis as in mapping statistics or programming helps with proficiency.

    Sounds like you need to open up your own tuning shop then. You are way ahead of 95% of tuners out there so will people fork out for lifetime guaranteed fully customised tunes? Or are they happy with meal deals?

    The key is value for money. If the customer sees value in their spending on custom tuning or meal deals, then that will keep them happy. If, as a shop, you can offer both services, that would be the best option. Some shops just don't have the time to sit down do a custom tune on every car. I think MACE offer a good service with their mail order tune and data logging.

    got quoted $2200nzd for pacemakers tri y headers and hiflo cats + about $350 fittingfrom magoos. does this sound about normal?

    they said 4-1 were to hard to fit. something about removing a steering arm. they said they hadn't worked on anything in the vf series yet.

    maybe an hsv maloo 340 exhaust might be a more afforable option if i can find 1. will any hsv 340 headers/cat fit even if i cant find the full cat back system?

    I loved my stock LS3 and it was bloody quick, I honestly rethought getting the 385kw pack. However, after a few weeks the pops and crackes started to annoy me. IMO they are over the top. My car is louder now and still has pops and crackes but it sounds like a complete package, with better balance between pops and crackes and the sound of the exhaust, a genuine mean exhaust for a modified car. Before the pops and crackles made me feel like I was being obnoxious driving my car, they just didn't feel right with the overall sound. Each to their own of course but I prefer my car with the 3 inch Defillipo exhaust, the pops and crackles are still there but they're not as stupid and they feel like they add to the overall sound rather than standing out and feeling over the top.
