Coolant change today:

I bought spill free funnel kit from Amazon.

EPAuto Spill Proof Radiator... https://www.amazon.com.au/dp/B01I40ZQWE?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share

5L of concentrated AcDelco dexcool coolant from Holden

Distilled water from IGA ;)

First make sure engine is totally cold.

Open the radiator cap.

Locate and unscrew the drain plug at the bottom of the radiator with 6mm alan key.

Let it drain.

Just over 5L of coolant will drain out.

Close the plug at the bottom.

Attach funnel as per instruction and fill with about 6L of clean water or demineralised water.

Run the car until thermostat opens up. You will know it's opened up as coolant will start to mix with clean water in the funnel.

Run for 5 min or so until bubbles stop coming up to surface.

Turn off the car and let it cool down.

This is what coolant looked like after first flush.

This now basically contains 75% water and 25% coolant

I then repeated the above procedure

I.e. let cool, drain, refil with clean water and run until it's bled.

This is the coolant after 2nd drain and flush.

I also emptied the overflow tank and cleaned it with out and emptied it again...

The ratio of water/coolant in the funnel below is 12.5% coolant and the rest is water.

I will repeat flush again tomorrow twice with distiled water and then last time I will fill it with 5L of dexcool concentrate. This will then be perfect 50/50 ratio and very clean water.

Yes, takes a long time....but I have time and in the end it will be properly flushed with no old coolant left in the block.

I also bought a new radiator cap to replace factory one given it's 5 years old now.

After 3rd flush. This is what came out.

This is now about 6% coolant and 94% water.

After this I filled it with 5L of distilled water.

You’ve got some serious homeopathic coolant flush technique going on :p:p:p

There are two coolant drain bolts on LS3. One is located on the passenger side of the block up front and the other on the drivers side the middle, both rather low on the block. Look at page 6531 of the workshop manual. Supposedly they are a paint to get to and coolant goes everywhere which is probably why the coolant flush procedure doesn’t reference these.

So wouldn’t it be better to remove these from the side of the block to allow all fluid to drain, thus using true medicine rather than some homeopathic remedy?

(Disclaimer, haven’t touched the cooling system on my LS3 so what you are doing may be easier)
