hi guys, I’m very new to the commodore scene.

I’ve got a question or two regarding mini tubbing.

When mini tubbing do the shocks keep their original location?

Basically no...

Really depends on size of tyre want to fit & whether using low profile tyre which are more forgiving or want to use tyres with large sidewall.

Look under car between shock & chassis rail is 2" gap where it's basically cut & moved over to butt up against rail then filler strip is welded in.

Above is done when you want to go bigger than 8.5' rim 255/60/15 or large diameter rim 10' wide with 275/30 or whatever licorice strip.

Even then might need modded or aftermarket control arms, possibly narrowed diff & some clearance work with a sledgie.

Thanks very much, really appreciated. So a 255/60r15 tyre on a 8.5” rim is the biggest you can go before tubbing?

I’ve read a bit a the McDonald racing bros website on what they recommend when wanting to fit larger wheels and tyres which say
VB TO VN COMMODORE SUSPENSION MODS

The recommended modifications to set up an early Commodore are adjustable upper trailing arms, tubular lower trailing arms and diff bracketry, QA1 coil over shockers and an adjustable panhard bar. Also requested was an anti roll bar (not recommended for street application) and mini tubs to fit a 28 x 9.5 x 15 slick.

28x10 requires a lot of work coilovers & new larger tubs after old ones cut out to rails etc.

8.5' rims 255/60 with correct diff length & wheel offset 'sometimes' can get away with pro9 tubular arms that take 2" shorter springs, grind down seatbelt bolt & tapometer work...much cheaper/quicker & less headf@ck.

10' rim with 28x10(275/60/15) costs alot more & most cases wont get engineered...smaller 8.5" with 255/60 is just a better way to go & still adequate for 10 sec cars.

Too many
255/60/15 can be done without fussing around too much.
This is 245/60/15 on a 7" stocky +43 with a standard 8 bolt drum brake rear. Kings ultra low springs and doesn't rub with a decent guard roll. Edit, second pic I think is with Lovells super lows in the rear actually, top pic is still with the kings

It's different when using 8.5' rim & drag radial as much more sidewall...especially using narrowed diff with discs brakes to fit 3 3/8 or 5" backspace rim.

Not impossible just need to be careful with measurements.

Alot of people wish they hadn't gone full emo when see how much gets changed & added costs lol

That's had stock wheel tubs opened to chassis rail to tuck tyre...most do coilovers or buy pro9 lower control arms & lower springs than move lower control arm brackets on body inboard like he has.

Budget accordingly.

Thanks for your help. One more question, what’s the go tubular lower control arms? Do they have a spring mount plate?
