looks like the hoon laws and speed cameras are working.

Victoria's road toll last year was the state's lowest since 1924.

A total of 242 people died on Victorian roads last year, 40 fewer than in 2012.

There was a reduction in the number of young people involved in road trauma but a 38 per cent increase in the number of older drivers killed.

Road Policing Command Assistant Commissioner Robert Hill says Victorians are getting the message about road safety.

"This would not have happened without the contributions of thousands of Victorians who have done their bit by heeding the messages," he said.

"Slowing down, not drinking and driving, taking rest breaks, putting the mobile phone away and belting up."

Roads Minister Terry Mulder says despite the results there is still plenty of work to be done.

"We know that we are only ever one bad week or one bad month away from losing those gains," Mr Mulder said.

"We need to continue to work together to come up with new initiatives and strategies to help us achieve our vision of zero deaths and serious injuries."

Police say the road toll data is provisional as some deaths may be removed or added.

and if they took stroke, heart attack and suicides out, it'd be lower.

I think youll find VicPol almost always managed to include speed as a factor.

there is a difference between speeding and not driving to the conditions.
when they say speed, they really mean not driving to the conditions
