Hi all. I have had a series 2 stereo in my series 1 for a couple of years now. But just recently it has been loading, then after a few seconds comes up with VIN not identified on the screen. No buttons work, HVAC doesn't work, dash sometimes freezes so that i don't have a working speedo, indicators lights showing (although they do actually work) etc. Had to drive home tonight with no dash as it just wouldn't work no matter how many times i turned on and off the car (sometimes if i turn off the car for 10 secs then back on again it decides to work). Another issue that has been popping up at the same time is the Stability control has been turning itself off sporadically and can't turn it back on pressing the button.

Went out there tonight, turned it on - VIN not identified and dash not working. Disconnected the stereo and dash worked. Reconnected and dash not working again, although the stereo was this time?!?!? :bang: So will be driving with no stereo for the next few days/weeks till i can get someone to have a look at it. Not wanting to re-install my series 1 stereo but might have to...

Has anyone else had this issue? Is the stereo fixable or would i need to get a new one? I'm in Perth so any recommendations as to where to take it to have someone look at it would be appreciated.

Sounds like a can bus error issue best bet would be to get a tech 2 put on to try and narrow down the problem and go from there If one module is not talking to another or one acts as a gateway then you will get the problems you described because the data can't reach the modules

So have had the car with an auto-elec/mechanic and car came up with following codes - co899, u0100, u0140

They have had the dash apart, looked at all connections, changed the battery. Even took it around to holden to get their opinion, but i think because it had a SII stereo installed instead of the original they didn't want anything to do with it. Reckoned they'd need it for at least 3 weeks and couldn't give a price, just wanted to do it on hourly rates...

With stereo disconnected it seemed to fix the issue the first one or two times i used the car, but now the dash dials etc are still dropping out even without the stereo connected. And still getting the ESP Off warning. Any ideas would be appreciated.

Cheers

Co899 is stability control fault u0100 is pcm/ecm Communications fault and u0140 is bcm communications fault so I'm gonna say the issue is not with the radio as data is dropping out and throwing stability control faults no gauges HVAC ans vin not identified I would be more leaning towards bcm as its the gateway to all modules you will need to get one linked to the car for it to work hope this helps

Yeah, I'm with illusion, I don't think it's the stereo causing the fault.

C0899 = ABS/ESC Module Low Supply Voltage - possible cause - Charging system fault
U0101 to U0249 = Can Bus Communication Problems between specific modules.

Just out of interest, why did you fit the SII stereo?
Did you install it yourself or did you have someone else do it?

I had some intermittent issue with the console fascia assembly which has the HVAC & stereo controls on it, as you may know, if you put your hand up and behind the fascia there is a small spring loaded button/lever which you pull back to un-clip the fascia assy, there is a connector plug on the bottom section of this fascia which electrically connects the fascia to the socket connector behind this console.

If this has been repeatedly unplugged, it could have developed a dry solder joint causing intermittent problems, the dry solder joint could be either on the plug connector on the fascia or on the socket connector tucked inside the metal bracket frame of the console.
But you'd need a bright light and magnifier to be able to see any cracks in the solder joints.

My issue with the HVAC console was NOT a dry solder joint though, it was just a bad connection due to resistance on the metal pins, due to dust/dirt and oxidation of the metal contacts etc

You could spray some specialised electronics contact cleaner on this connector to clean it and improve the connection.
** DO NOT USE WD40! **

You can buy the specialised electronics contact cleaner spray from Jaycar Electronics:

Electronic Cleaning Solvent Spray Can | Aerosols | Chemical Aids | Service Aids | PRODUCTS | NA1004 | Jaycar Electronics

I'm pretty sure this product is safe on plastic, also, if it doesn't come with a 'straw' get one of those, as that will provide a more accurate and focussed spray to go just where you need it on the connector, and not all over the PCB.

*I'm not saying this will definitely fix your issue, but connectors in vehicles can often develop various contact problems.

Oh, I should add, when you use that contact cleaner, spray the connector socket & plug and use a clean soft bristle toothbrush to scrub the contacts.
(not your girlfriend's! LOL)

ie: spray the connector and then gently scrub with toothbrush before the cleaner evaporates
The mentioned product is specifically formulated NOT to leave any oily residue.

Thanks for the replies guys. have got it booked in with an auto elec for a couple of weeks time. Only thing is he is sayin it could be an expensive fix as he's not sure which module will need replacing at this point, and it could be a trial and error thing... using new modules could be $1000 a pop for what may or may not be the issue.

Can i get second hand ones from a wrecker to use instead? Can these be reprogrammed (if they need to be) to suit? We're only a 1 income family and with christmas, birthdays etc comin up don't really have the cash to be throwing around to "hopefully" fix the problem.

Cheers

Because we don't know too much about the history of the car (Eg IQ install, other possible electrical modifications),
The first thing I would be checking is wiring around the BCM.

The IQ would have required the radio connector to be re-pinned, or optimally a secondary adapter to be fitted to allow for the different connections between S1 and S2 radios.
shorting (Or even bad noise) on the Single Wire Can bus can wreak havoc for the Radio, Cluster, HVAC, and other creature comfort type devices.

The u0100 is a generic CAN BUS fault code (So its not specific whether it is the Single Wire Can Bus, or the more important High Speed Can bus (Or Both)), but I would be concentrating on getting the SW Can bus up first, before replacing any modules.

The Stability low voltage problem may be separate to the Can bus issues.

Before you send the car to the auto electrician, try this,

1) Disconnect and charge the battery. (Or use a new battery if you have one available)
(Make sure is has a good charge, VEs HATE low battery voltages. You may have enough to crank and start the motor,
but if the modules do not have the correct voltage during cranking, they will have trouble sending CAN Bus commands, and will log faults - EG Stability Control Low Voltage).

2) Reconnect the Battery, and see if things improve or not. - Check DTCs, clear, and recheck.
(Might be hard if you cannot read and clear logged fault codes. You may need a good ELM scanner like the Software on ELM street, sold by Tazzi (Envious Customs) for this.

3) If CAN bus problems continue, disconnect the IQ, clear DTCs power cycle and test again.

4) If Can BUS problems still exist, disconnect any S1 to S2 adapters (if fitted), or check wiring modifications for Radio.
You will want to bring the wiring back to completely stock here. Clear DTCs, and check again.

I am willing to guess that it is most likely a wiring issue here, (Specifically the SW CAN bus line).
Only once this is ruled out, I would be changing the BCM.

** Some notes with the SW Can
I have had SW Can bus faults that require the battery to be disconnected completely for a minute or so to rectify.
(Eg sending large amounts of garbage on the SW Can will shut the BUS down completely, preventing the car to be turned ON or started unless the battery is disconnected).

Thanks
