Should I pay someone to rebuild my alternator or should I just do it myself?

Depends how much tools/experience you have if its a bosch, the brush/ regulator can be changed over easy and bearings are just nuts and bolts and basic taking 2 bearings off and on . A auto elect would probably turn the slip rings down but that isnt a necessity.

I was having a closer look at the alternator and found this wire that leads back to the alternator. I’m wondering if this is why I am not getting charge through to my battery. I originally thought my alternator needed a rebuild due to not charging battery. What do you think?

Looks like brown wire that plugs into back of alternator it's for dash charge light in dash.

If factory 55A alternator struggling to keep battery charged up just upgrade to bosch v8 vn-vs 85A

Chassis rail lip doesn't look tapped down underneath alternator ...6cyl bodyshell?

You checked if alternator is charging with multimeter? Battery voltage good or needs regular trickle charge from not being driven?

85A alternators are good..brown wire to charge light, usually need diode if running msd/crane...white wire to 12v battery supply or loop to alternator stud.

Other than that sometimes voltage regulator go haywire...either replace or take out & clean 2 prongs

the brown indicator light definitely needs to be continuous and connected and conductor not touching the body for the alternator to charge and have a good bulb on the dash light
