VL berlina
looking to drop a v8 carby setup into my 87 berlina na. It was factory auto converted to manual.
Suggestions on motors? Gearboxes and other things I need to look out for please? What would make a good donor car? Thanks in advance

Carb converted LS would be cheapest and easiest for parts, unless you found a VN-onward donor

AFAIK, the LS would need to meet emissions requirements of the year it was produced which would negate the use of a carb.

351 clevo is my suggestion.

Most likely be buying from fb marketplace...easiest would be waiting for complete efi 304 donor car as they do pop up but need to be quick usually be a statesman or abandoned project vn/p.

Only carby set ups you'll see these days will be red or blue 308 out of a kingy or torrie then have to chase up all parts to make fit even harder if want air con or p/steer.

A lot comes down to how much can do yourself & the budget which makes vn to vs efi 304/4l60e simplest choice...just dont get vs series 3 or vt.

I thought the 87 Berlins was EFI catalytic converters which means that replacing with carb fed engine will make it illegal for road use.

So if your desire is a modded registered road car, it’s only a matter of time before your stopped, things checked and you’re then pooch screwed by having any carb fed engine installed.

If it’s a paddock basher, you can do anything you want.

So what’s the use case for the car and why not turbo the straight 6 which is the more conventional mod route?

According to this and yes I read quickly over it, the injection only seemed to be fitted to the walkies....So if this is the case, a carbed V8 can be fitted to the car legally....

Have a read for yourself and make your own decision

Yeah but a later engine legally has to have equivalent emissions gear to the level of the donor. So if you put a new ford ranger motor i to a GQ patrol, you'd have to have adblue and the dpf, for example
