Some wear but no deep scarring most probably get away with polish with 800/1000 grit

Scarrings not bad but that bearing has definitely seen better days. Depending on what it mics out to be clearance wise I'd definitely say a polish is all it needs.

Why not replace the bearings? ACL bearings are under $60 a set. When my V6 started showing the copper my mech said they needed replacing.

Nice overhaul and top thread. I suppose you will chage Welch plugs and rear main seal, they all leak from there even though they never need topping up. It will be interesting to see if you replace it will you find seal dried out or simply dirty or is the crank the problem with varnish and sludge or simply that because pur motors sludge up they build too much pressure increasing oil leaks.

yes i will of course, I'll replace the bearings
I meant give the crank just needs a polish

interesting the sump gasket was one piece seal, unless its been changed before, and few on sump bolts were not overly tight
the rear seal is non-rope and neoprene

was hoping to get to flat top pistons, as this VN aero is supposed to be 9.5 but cant see how they can get that with 0.040" gasket and 10cc dished pistons
I'm using 63 cc heads (92060019), pistons look to be original holden so assuming 1.71 Compression Height, according to ACL 4901 piston these are supposed to be 9.9/1 with 71cc heads (I cant see that)
With 0.020" deck height and its coming out at 8.3/1.
If I use 0.027" gasket and get another 2 points to 8.51

would like to be + 9.5/1, which seems to be the older acl piston # 9490 which is flat top

if pulling the crank to polish might as well take pistons out for hone and replace rings

not sure whether I want to go hydraulic roller or stay with Hydraulic flat tappet camshaft

now the icing on the cake
when i was taking a closer look at the oil pickup screen, found something there which was sucked around the screen, looks to be rubber band or perfectly round bead of silicon. Perhaps the person assembling engine was having a bad hair day ?

pistons out of block, inspected each one no real marks on bearings, look to be original bearing was dated 7 Aug 1990, and GM #R770 and no scratches.
Bore looks okay no heavy marks, need to mic them up and see whether its original, and check compression height and crank then decide what I'm going to do with pistons...would like to at least go to flat tops. example of bearings

I've seen this a few times on 304's I've stripped down. theres almost always some form of left over silicon from a gasket job in pickups of engines that have had work done on them before.

It's amazing they still hold oil pressure once they get some crud in those pickups, not like they were ideal to begin with.

All these motors sludge up and build carbon in rockers. In 2004 my cousin who's a mechanic and I pulled my engine out with 117k at the time to do Welch plugs and gaskets and there was sludge in pick up like that even though I always changed oil every 6 months or 5k with flush usually. The sump gasket genuine is 1 piece. He also said bearings etc were in good condition so these motors when original only seem to need cam and seals and a clean up if keeping that way it seems .
Seems they leak through rear main seal because they run dirty so don't know the solution to this, they probably needed bigger sump oil cooler perhaps.

How many kms on this motor?
