I know this won't be of much help but if something has gone hay wire like losing 4th in my honest opinion you would be best off taking it to a Trans specialist. After all they charge heaps but considering what's inside them I think it's sometimes justified.

To give you a ball park sort of a figure, if the trans has to come out you may as well say there is an automatic $200.00 on the spot.

One tip I did learn fairly recently when I had problems with mine was to check the trans oil. If you pull out the dipstick is the oil pink or a dark red? If you put a bit on your hand and have a smell, if it smells like it has been burnt I can tell you to start withdrawing cash from the ATM otherwise if it's a normal sort of smell you should get away with it reasonably cheaply *hopefully*.

Not to some ideas although unlikely it is possible.

Have you checked your fluid level? It is possible the fluid is too high although this doesn't explain why you would have lost 4th gear.
Have you tried adjusting the kick down cable which sits on top of the throttle body? Does the trans change fairly smoothly as it normally would?
Do you manual shift? This one in itself is a big no-no, I reckon 90% of trans problems I've heard about is people manual shifting a stock auto box. I think we all try it at some stage and most of us learn an expensive lesson, I know I certainly did.

I hate transmissions especially when there are signs of them failing due to the fact they are very expensive fix and/or replace if it gets to that stage.

ok, here's the story with the commodore of mine, i took it to a auto place on monday and well the new's wasnt good. it took me ages to get to the shop, by the time i had goten there i only had 1st and 2nd gear, and reverse, so i will summ up what turned out to be wrong with the old girl.

the clutch plate for 3rd and 4th had gone bye bye's ( i didnt know they had a clutch plate for gear's in a auto) what had happend is something had come loose in the gear box, and it went threwout the whole thing, little metal filing's cloged up the filter preventing the flow of oil, as a result i basicaly cooked the thing from the inside out. now price wise to fix it is well, not cheap, $1350 for the new box to be put in the thing, the only problem is it's gonna take 2 day's for them to do it, why so long , i realy dont know. they also found a vibration in the car, it turned out that my rear uni was actually rooted, so i have goten them to do both front and rear unis and the centre bearing for me. hopefully this will fix it once and for all, after the money that has been spent on the girl lately, i realy dont wanna spend anymore, A word of advice, never lend a v6 to your dad who all his life has been driving valiant rt chargers (hemmi 245 or 265) he will realy screw it up on ya.

keep driving peoples, and drive safe

if you live in southeast queensland and wanna know the name of a good auto bloke, email me, [email protected], only serious reply's though

Wow, that's what I hate about transmissions, they are so unpredictable and expensive to fix that's for sure.

You might be able to pick one at a wrecker or in the trading post but not knowing what condition it's in it would probably be best to splash out a get a new one like you are doing.

When the uni joint gets done it's best to get the tailshaft balanced, otherwise you could end up being back at square one replacing the uni joint again.

I know exactly how you feel though at one stage I had 3 weeks of drama's with my trans, ended up costing about the $1000 mark which really hurts especially when your not working.

new gearbox auto

new uni's, 4 of the sucker's,

new centre bearing, (where tailshaft splits)

and a new powerstearing pump and rack

not a bad effort for a blow gearbox hey, i love the dammage done..

I am sure glad I wasn't paying that bill!!

Considering what was done that is fairly reasonable. The steering rack and pump wouldn't have had any affect on the transmission, it would have been a case of it was just buggered and it was time for a new one.

Did they do a wheel alignment for you? If not I would strongly advise getting one done.

Confirm with them that the tail shaft was balanced while your at it.

With the amount you spent I would certainly hope it drove like a new Commodore

yeah, they did a wheel alignment for me and all that stuff that they do, they confirmed for me that the tailshaft had been checked and ballanced, it didnt need a major ballance, most of the problem he said was comming from the gearbox it's self, something was lose in there sending a vibration down the tailshaft. i was told what it was, but i know sweet f.a. about auto's. and as for the repairs to the powerstearing, well the rack was kinda like wear and tear you get that with a old car, the pump i kinda did, i got the shits when i blew up the auto, i kinda took to the powerstearing pump with a wheelbrace (out of anger)

it handles like a new car. boy does she go like a charm. realy dont have many roads i can open up on here, but where i could i sure did. (if i dont get a speed camera ticket, im a lucky man)
