AWESOME man absolutely awesome.. Havent seen you in ages be great to catch up an have a ride in this! cheers mat
awesome! just read the thing from start to page 15. wow its hasnt taken that long realli, but it looks like u have done it mostly on ur own! are u goin 2 paint the rest of the car in the paint thats in ur engine bay? would look pretty nice, ohh and also paint ur bumpers in dark black like stowln or wateva the number plates are... once u get it going properly with reverse u goin 2 cum down to KK and show it off??? cheers troy
The car caught fire at the servo a little bit on the very next drive !, but Luke put it out before anything was damaged
yeah bit of a heart-starter! the braided steel line for the oil feed to the turbo sprung a leak? - seemingly the silicone/teflon/plastic lining couldn't stand the heat! (the line ran a good 3" away from all heat sources!) - I thought it'd be a-ok as it came as part of a turbo fitting kit, and was braided steel, but that'll learn me good! All in all there's 0% damage - seems the fire was just limited to flaming oil all over the turbo exhaust housing. I got in there with the extinguisher VERY quickly, and there is nothing flammable on that side of the engine bay (due to the heat of the turbo) - there's not even any paint damage! woo! - I consider that my lucky day. Next morning went straight to the shops and bought another fire extinguisher - the first one had just paid for itsself 500x over I'm also now running a steel pipe from the block to the turbo for the oil feed now - pain to connect, but seems much safer! After vacuuming and washing out all the powder from the extinguisher, I made up an intake pipe with a fitting for a 38mm plumb-back line from the bov. I also re-adjusted the base timing and tinkered a bit with the tune. It's actually only running 6psi boost at the moment - I think the 10psi was just my blurred 'so many things to think about at once' vision and quick glances at the boost gauge (the 10 and 6 are very close together ) but after a few more drives today, it's definately only on 6 psi - which is good, as that's the rating of the wastegate spring, and it sticks there nicely! With the new timing and tune enhancements, it now brakes loose and skates on dry road in 1st gear - it's no top gear power skid, but for 6psi, 10:1 afrs, conservative spark advance, and brand new tyres, this could be the beginning of something special! I also made up a quick temporary heat shield to save the paint on the bonnet - although it's ugly quick and dirty - it's dramatically effective! - the bonnet has gone from un-touchable after a run to 'warm'. I need to conduct a few more experiments and chances are it'll end up with exhaust wrapped up and a nice alloy heatshield fabbed up. and a pic attached to ease concerns about fire damage (you can see where i forgot to clean the extinguisher powder, and where it's baked onto the manifold), along with a snap of the culprit
You lucky bastard! That could've been hairy! Woah... that oil line really didn't take any punishment at all did it Thank goodness you had an extinguisher on board!
Got away safely on that one Luke, good to see its all OK. I think it will be the last time i mention flames in your thread.
Luke how much power roughly are you expecting with this? I wanna see/hear it go in the flesh sounds awesoome
i'd stay away from wrapping those pipes, it just causes em to rust out real quick. get soemthing like HPC coatings, they work a treat. they can also do the exhaust housing on the turbo, withstands over 1100 degrees i think for there top coatings. looks ace too damn lucky. i carry a extinghuser and hope to never use it:thumbsup:
The exhaust mani and dump are actually stainless (the rusty looking marks in the pic is the baked on fire extinguisher powder ), so I don't think the moisture that this wrap held would cause them to rust? The HPC stuff is good, but would cost almost a grand to get it coated! - I've got some graphite impregnated wrap on the way, I reckon i'll give it a crack and inspect after a few weeks on the road, see what it all looks like under the wrap, looks will be taken care of with a nice heat shield over the pipework - meanwhile, i definately underestimated the amount of heat on that side of the bay I think a new and improved extended metal oil drain pipe is on the cards too!
cant belive its finally on the rd, i couldnt belive my eyes when i saw ya, we'll hav to go for a cruise once i get me defect and epa cleared, when ya gonna spray the rest of it?
no... after he gets it fast enough to peel the factory paint off....then he'll get some one to throw the primer, then base, then top, then clear onto it as he vrrrrrmmmmm toot toot toot tooooo's by... The heat from the engine bay will natuarlly bake the paint so it will come out 1000% aZk. i wanna see it do a mono!
should be good once the boost is up and has a nice tune, at the moment it should be on par with a vl turbo of the same specs, same motor/boost, diff ratio and weight of the car.
yeh I can't wait! It's such a weird feeling having a 'power tap'.... you just turn the boost up and tune accoringly, and presto! there's the extra power! It'd be nice to have her tuned and making some respectable power in time for the cruise for charity!
you have the rebuilt motor right there, the possibilities are endless. so was it worth the wait and is it better than your sc14 vn v6?
really nice car Luke, doing something diffrent and using a nissan motor, could say this isnt a holden anymore. its nissan vn had a quick look thought but didnt pick up what your done to the motor, are you just going to be killing na bottom ends till you build one? nah the vls dose pipe makes it heckticly fast you wont complain with 180rwkw on 10psi:driving:
