just got my tacho working again in the calais and just wondering.. in nuetral its reving at what lookslike just under750 mayb 740 and in gear its donw to like 600 rpm is this way too low? i no i can adjust it but id rather find out why its so low, v6 by the way
mine idles at inbetween 1000rpm and 900rpm so that seems really low maybe tighten your throttle cable?
No you can't adjust it. Not without being able to change the parameters in the MemCal anyway. Don't trust the car tach. as they are not intended to be precision instruments. Check that there is a green cap over the throttle stop screw. If it is missing someone has probably messed with it and you may have to rectify their butchery. Cleaning the throttle body, particularly the edges of the throttle plate and the TB throat, and the idle air control valve (IAC - black cyl. on back of TB) may help if there is a genuine problem. This is best done with a rag soaked in kerosene and/or an old toothbrush (carefully, as it is possible to bend the throttle plate). Do not use carb. cleaner which washes the lubricant out of the throttle spindle.
the V6 is supposed to idle around 700 rpm, give or take 100 rpm. So you don't actually have a problem at all benwahballs, yours sounds like it's idling too fast
yer but like when its in gear its cutting out like a missfire, making the belt go nuts, no it hasnt been tampered with, and a mechanic at work said to just turn it up at the throttle and hel monitor my "steps" (watever they are) but he didnt have alot of time to look over it
well thats wat it is in the holden manuel at work so thats wat it is i work at holden so i am hoping they would know?
Fix what is causing it to cutout/missfire first and the idle will be sorted at the same time. It is pointless trying to adjust the base idle (minimum idle speed) with the throttle stop screw while any other mechanical problems are present. The actual idle speed is controlled by the ECM which varies the position of a valve - the IAC valve - which allows air to flow around the throttle plate. The "steps" the mech. is referring to corresponds to the position of the IAC motor; there are 256 discrete positions - steps - that the IAC motor can have. It's not something that is of any great significance as long as there is room for the IAC valve to open and close ie. not near position 0 at idle.
Did my VN V6 throttle body with a tonne of carby cleaner about 12months ago, still fine. Wouldn't worry about this possibility too much. Mine would stick open but that's because I didn't run the cable properly, it was caught on something. Fixed it that day and it was all fine. Plugs and leads, do those and see how your idle is after that.
we use brake parts cleaner at work so i did that, um done the plugs and leads already everything that should be done to fix this has been done
hehehe sammy b, carby cleaner is the best stuff ever. washed off nearly 15 years of black **** out my throttle body without even needing to scrub it my hands did hurt afterwards though....
yeah it's also one of the most potent chemicals ever, put some on the TB and leave it for a few seconds, it's ice cold.... not the sort of stuff you want to breathe in, not the sort of thing you want on your hands either lol oh and if you clean your TB with this stuff, if your motor is playing up afterwards try cleaning out the electrics around the TB again. I needed to, I left the electrics attached and all the crap in the TB washed into them lol
