Hi guys just wondering if anyone has had the same issue. I'm in the middle of converting my vs to manual and found the gearbox crossmember doesn't bolt into the right place i've come to the conclusion that the extension housing on the vs t5 is different to the vn-vr item any thoughts??
Should go straight in and bolt up perfect theres no difference unless you have the mount around the wrong way or your trying to put a T5 into a VS that had a getrag but im still not sure whether that would have a affect on mounting points or not. i think it would because getrag is shorter then T5 so would mount differently.
If the gearbox and crossmember has come directly out of a VN, it will bolt straight into the VS. There is no difference apart from the flywheel. The conversion kit in my VS is out of a VN. Take some photos and we will be able to help you out a little better
2 or 4 bolt holes in the cross member? they didn't do the same crappy thing they did with auto's and change the cross member to only have 1 bolt to each chassis rail? (ok it's a mono%^$E construction but we'll call it a chassis rail) haven't seen a manual vn for a damn long time....
I know the floor is slightly different from VR to VS and the exhaust is not a direct fit, maybe the gearbox xmember is different too.
Well, I did a VR motor/t5 conversion in my old VS a few years ago now, but I can say from experience that the bolting points on the VR manual crossmember and the floor of the VS are different... Get ur hands on the VS t5 crossmember and use the VR mount between the crossmember and the box. I'm pretty sure it was change a little bit between the series.. Should solve the issue, that's what I did anyway.... But I also had several other issues like the wiring for my motor didn't match up with the VS dash harness... But that a hole different issue... Always remember... Sideways isn't always slower, and more powerful doesn't always mean faster...
Just to add... I have a spare gearbox and x member in my shed that is 100% from a VN, and i also have a crossmember from a VR that i bought from a self serve wrecker. They are the same The other thing... Swapped my manual conversion out of my VN 5L directly into my VR SS.. Thats V8's i know, but they wouldnt change the bolt points on the chassis? All T5 x members ive seen have been one bolt on each rail (side) All v8's have been interchangeable VN-VS, all v6 ones have interchanged VN- VS. Oh and another one... Mate had a VN v6 manual and xmember fitted to his VS SIII ute.
Hey guys thanks for all the info in short found there is a difference in the extension housings both external and internal the vs t5 i picked up from a wrecker had a syncro on reverse and the other t5 didnt for the photos the vs t5 extension housing is on the left and the vn-vr item is on the right for the x member i used the original vs one which is the same as the auto
Was the vn gearbox out of a s1 or s2? Ive been looking for info on this too since i read this thread- im confused because you hear ppl all the time fitting an older box to the vs but there is actually a photo to suggest otherwise up here??? you cant argue with that but are all the ppl saying the older boxes do fit wrong?? is urs a s2 or later vs? I have a s1 and looking to do a t5 conversion...
well i have a vn t5, unsure if s1 or 2 but iv bolted it up to a manual ecotec vs with flywheel to suit, worked fine and again with an auto ecotec vs. maybe the difference is between s1 and 2 varients?
Like I've said in the past, I can only speak fr actually installing them. Have never had issues with earlier Vn gearboxes not fitting vs.. my own car has had 3 different gearboxes and crossmembers on it now and they have all fitted.
Just wonderingif anyone knows if a turbo 700 crossmember from my vr wagon will work with the t5 I am installing all the bolts line up but the box seems a bit high in trans tunnel
