I have an FX with a series 1 Vn motor/trans. I know the tranny is sad, and has been for a while, ( seals gone hard, can have a cut lunch between selecting gears and it actually moving when cold) but once ive driven around the block its ok so i have lived with it, for over 12 mths now i have been chasing a miss/ shudder in the car when its hot. yesterday after hoping i might have finally fixed it, it came back after 45 mins of around town driving, something made me remember something that happened about 8 yrs ago when towing a caravan from victoria to queensland. when slowing coming into a town from sitting on 100 kmh for a while the trans would shudder, would just take it out of drive and go back to 3rd whilst in towns and issue went away, i never worried about it as once that trip was over it never did it again.
so with this in mind yesterday i played around with the shifter, and i discovered the following.
car misses/ shudders under moderate to heavy acceleration from a slow speed, uphill far worse than on the flat. when in drive 3rd or 2nd it still occurs, yet when i select 1st, it accelerates like a rocket ship and will not miss a beat, i can pull 60 or 70 kmh in first and it dosent do it. yet the moment i selected 2nd 3rd or 4th again it would happen again.

Have i finally found the answer? is it just the tranny surging? is it even possible for the tranny to cause this? or is the lower gear causing less load on the motor and therefore its not missing when in first? when its in drive and starting from a complete stop it changes to second almost immediately you get moving, so its hard to say if it does it in first when another gear is selected.

motor and trans are stock standard units i got from a low KM wreck about 15 yrs ago. apart from oil changes nothing has been done to them. i run a smallish trans cooler mounted in the V of the rear legs of the front Subframe, and a B&M quicksilver shifter. car dosent get a lot of miles lately due to this issue, and life in general getting in the way.

I do have a "Reco" box sitting in the shed i bought 3 or 4 yrs ago should i just bite the bullet and swap em over?

Any advice welcome

thanks

.....best bet is to get a Tranny specialist to look/drive it,its amazing the knowledge the good ones pick up over the years.
Not a huge job replacing the Tranny with your spare in any case.

If you know the record box is good you might as well put it in. If the problem continues with the new box you know it's something else.

Still a cheap check before going to a transmission specialist. I have to adjust mine ( as in reset the cable on the adjuster) every 5 years or so.

Hi
had a similar problem with my VP. Had a shudder under load at about 95 to 100kph. Eg uphill under acceleration.
Tracked it done to the torque converter, apparently they are prone to warping with excess heat and causes a problem similar to what you are discribing.

Does your oil look ok? Not brown and smelling of caramel due to overheating. And not overfilled?

fluid looks fine, has only done about 6000k since a service, dosent smell burnt or anything, might possibly be overfull a tad, but its always been filled the same

if i get time this week i will look closer at the fluid level, and maybe adjust the kickdown cable,
does anyone have a link to a page that explains how to adjust it?
