im not sure if its just me but the S2 manifold looks like it has more rough cast marks inside.

Dose anyone know what the round thing attached to the bottom of the S1 manifold it.
I had a look at the one on my old manifold and it didn't seem to have a purpose

The round piece on the bottom of the series 1 manifold is below the positive crankcase ventilation (PCV) valve. It stops the oil from being splashed up the into the PCV valve. The PCV valve is just a one way breather and shouldnt have oil being splashed up through it.

The only real difference between them is that the series 2 has runners that are about 1 inch longer. It's worth a few KW and NM

it can, just look at the pics. they will bolt up fine, just you will either have to use only the rocker cover pipe for pcv or.... you can with a little work, drill the holes in the head, just be real careful not to go too far.

coolant passages are in same spots. but one on the s2 is blocked off, but this doesnt matter, as the coolant passages in the heads are the same.

well, they look the same to me. all the hosing is revised, so you'd have to change the hoses to suit. gaskets match up, as holden supposedly only sells the s2 gaskets now.
