Hey all.. I have a VN wagon that is cutting out only when i turn right only. I have a new pump, i cleaned the tank out, new fuel filter, the only thing i can see or knwo thats wrong with it, is Knock sensor. The wire has snapped off, Could that be the problem, I have changed a few other things including motor just to get it to give me more then 180ks per tank!! So far after the new pump i have gotten just under 300 to just over halfa tank .. Any ideas?

It could have been when you refitted the fuel pump assembly, if it was sat back into the swirl pot incorrectly so when your turning all the fuel is moving to one side of tank +no fuel near swirl pot or near pump = car cutting out

It was doing it before i changed the fuel pump, i only changed the fuel pump becasue i was told that was it and i can tell you that it was full of crap as was the filter. It started all of a sudden about 6 months ago , and the new pump went back in the same way it come out and now i have no idea whats going on.

If it is a v6 and happens when decelerating, it can be ap sticky idle control valve. Try giving ur throttle body a good clean. Make sure u clean the idle motor on it too.

:S. Im sorry guys, I didnt give enough info at the start. It happens when you accelerate only. I have cleaned the throttle body, and changed it to a new one. :S .. I have changed Map sensor, air temp sensor, coolant temp sensor, fan switch, tps, idle control, crank angle, fuel pressure reg, injectors, fuel rail, fuel lines, and the only thing that keeps comming up is the knock sensor as the engine light is on. Ive changed coil pack from the choc block one to the series 2 coil pack I have even changed the motor :S

It sounds like it might be a problem with the swirl pot, which is a pot inside the fuel tank that the fuel pump pickup sits in. The fuel return line is supposed to be connected to this swirl pot, which then constantly keeps it full of fuel. Was the fuel return line reconnected to the fuel pump assembly when you had the fuel pump assembly out? This fuel return line is located inside the fuel tank and connects between the fuel pump assembly and swirl pot, and if its not connected, the swirl pot can momentarily run dry as the car accelerates/brakes etc, which will then cause it to stall.
Heres a link below to an old post I put up ages ago, showing pics of the inside of a sedan fuel tank, you can see the swirl pot and how the return line connects etc. The wagon fuel tank is very similar, just a different shape.

    http://forums.justcommodores.com.au/vr-vs-holden-commodore-1993-1997/135749-fuel-tank-fuel-pump-assembly-swirl-pot.html

Id also be fixing the knock sensor fault. The knock sensor wire is a While/red wire and goes from the knock sensor to ECU terminal B11. Check the wiring and connectors, and if its all clean and tight etc, replace the knock sensor. The knock sensor is located just in behind the oil filter. It just screws into the engine block, just remove its wiring connector, and unscrew it..

:boxing:Cheers mate, I know the knock sensor is disconnected, the wire was snapped and i finally got it to connect up. But now i think its just stuffed and not working at all. I just didnt know if that would affect it. I know the car needs a serious tune and cant do it till the knock sensor is fixed. However, There was no line connected. the return line you are talking about has always be clamped off. I have the pump line and return line as you have pictured on the assembly, I will take a pic and upload if that helps and you can see it clamped off. :S Now i am worried, cause this started over night and there has never been a line that went to the swirl pot, and this has never happened till 3 months ago :boxing::boxing:

Id be taking the clamp off the return line, and refitting the return line to the swirl pot so fuel can flow back into it and keep it full.

its not clamped via a clamp, its the metal tubing that has been clamped and twisted around. Its always been like that. I know the old owners and they have said the last fuel pump they did was 1998. and it had the same pipe clamped and twisted. I cant untwist it. :S

Ok i jsut checked it, It only has one line coming from the housing, (the fuel pump) and the return has been blocked off. However, there is a return line to the right (on the side closer to the right wheel) that clamps into it. So i dont know. and for this to start over night has concerned me worse :S

Hey all, I have been surfing the net to either 1, find a way to blow this car up without it coming back on me or 2, finding out why the VN doesnt have a swirl pot. There is nothing in there, other then a few walls in it. It has never had a swirl pot, as the wall inside are metal and there is no where for it to go if it was to break down.???

Just get another VN wagon tank from the wreckers and fit that. The fuel return line should go into the tank via a seperate connection on the fuel tank on the VN and early VP models. This seperate return pipe connector is located towards the drivers side of the tank, just over from the fuel pump assembly. This was all later changed, and the return line was re-routed in through the fuel pump assembly, right next to the pump outlet pipe, instead of having its own seperate connector on the tank. The pic on the left is of the early setup with the seperate return line into the tank. The right pic is of the later setup with the return line going into the tank via the fuel pump assembly.

Could be a loose electrical connection (or a broken wire) that moves or is being pulled as the motor leans to the left when you turn right. Something that relates to your ignition. The connection where the loom attaches to the DFI is a possibility, or the connection to the crank angle sensor.

Thanks Sav, I have checked most wires, but may recheck ALL wires and connectors. Stupid thing is doing my head in, I dont knwo if this may help, But unless the car is leaning to the right (left wheels higher then the right) it wont start. the lower the fuel the more chance it has of happening. I was stuck on the side of the road until i managed to push the car so the left hand wheels where on a gutter it then started and drove off, most of the time when under halfa tank, closer to quarter, i mainly have to drive on the left side of the road :S just to get home or to a servo (which ever is closer)

if it only does it with less than half a tank of fuel it most likely be the fuel pump is in the wrong position the pump doesnt sit in the swirl pot as Dans_vz said i no this was the problem with mine when it happened to me

It will be the return line, its common for them to break right at the swirl pot.

Id take off fuel pump assembly and reach in tank you will find the other end of hose floating around.

its a pain to reattach to the swirl pot with tank fitted easiest to go buy another pump assembly with the return line on it from wreckers.

Mine needs doin, but i keep above 1/4 tank coz im lazy

Cheers Calais. I have replaced the tank because the little metal connecting pipe that the return line and swirl pot line connects to was blocked and hen i tried to take the line off, it snapped completely out of the tank.(there was no way known i was able to get my hand in there as it is only a 3 to 3 1/2 hole.)I replaced the tank and made sure the pump was in the pot, then filled it up with about 15 ltrs, Now it wont start, I disconnected the fuel filter and tried to crank it, first off nothing was comming out now there is very little fuel is coming out, so it has gotten a little tiny better but New pump and confussed. Do i need to let the fuel seep into the pot, or do i need to fill the sucker first ??

Ok here an update, Ive had it with this car. I changed the tank, filled it to just under halfa, and it started. took it for a test run and guess what, It still cuts out. 100% the swirl pot pipe is connected and not blocked. Everytthing is ok. What the hell is going on. It was harder to start twice just before but it started and drive ok. Im not far of placing power pole in the middle of the bonnet, Please help Im losing it I am on the pension and cant afford this **** !! Its drinking fuel :S

Maybe check along the fuel line around the engine to make sure its not getting kinked or squashed etc when the engine moves whilst cornering. I cant see what else would cause this. Ive seen bad battery terminals cause cars to stall whilst cornering as the battery moves slightly, but I guess you would have looked at these already.
