volts jumping all over the place 10 to 16v help needed please

ok my volts are all over the place my headlights go dim then like there on high beam but theyre not this has happened after i did some arc welding on the underside of my vk im thinking its some sort of regulator problem but im not sure where the regulator is on a carby vk or if its even got one for that matter or could it be another problem? im not real good with electrics.any ideas or has anybody had this problem and fixed it, thanks.

Yes, sounds like your regulator and possibly the alternator is stuffed.
If the alternators in the VK's are the same as the VR-VS's then the regulator is in the alternator. It is easy to replace and costs approx $40.00, 2 screws and you dont even need to remove the alternator. It may be wise to check the diodes in the alternator in case your welding has fried them and giving excessive AC ripple output.

thanks so the regulator is the black box on the back of the alternator with the brushes attached to it ?

yep the earth strap was disconnected at the battery terminal but my mate connected the arc welder earth cable direct to the battery lead going to the alternator.

Your mate used the positive lead on the cars wiring as the earth for welding??? I'm surprised you didn't do more damage.

Next time use the chassis itself.

as the old saying goes "if you want something done properly do it yourself" ill be sticking to that.
