Please help it can't die it's one of the last genuine ones left it just won't crank it just clicks in the relay when you turn the key immobiliser is turning off fuel pump is priming it does not make sense . Then when I try to short out the starter motor it just sparks any ideas please !!!
At a rough guess, i would say it was the starter motor. But it could also be the whole engine has seized, was it running prior to replacing the battery? what is it's history?
Yeah no motor runs beautifull it is completely original build no 330 Was running like a gem then has not been driven or started for 3 months put a fresh battery in and nothing but a click in the relay . Everything primes good when immobiliser is pressed ? I have tryed to short the starter but just sparks ?
When you shorted the starter motor out, did it sound like it made an attempt to crank the engine, or simply spark? Maybe try the old trick of giving the starter a quick sharp crack with a hammer to see if it has become stuck and needs some persuasion to get it turning again.
Yeah i was just going to replace it but no one has one at all and there is one on eBay for 300 bit pricy I thought ok I will give it a good knock but pain in the ass ?
Nah still nothing after a good knock so do u think definetly starter motor or could it be something else I know it's only a strarter but deadset 300 of eBay cheapest around and only one around any ideas were else?
Pull your current starter out and have a play with it, can you move it with your hand? does anything look rusted? Do that before spending any money, as it might be fixable until you get the cash together to get a new one.
Yeah true good thinking will do that now is it just the two bolts Hold up could it be a bad wiring connection to the starter or a earth wire !
It is always a good idea to pull the faulty part out to confirm the fault before spending any dosh on new parts, it could get very expensive otherwise!
+ 5L starters were never that great to begin with. Back in the day on my old SS I went through at least 1 a year (when the car was being used as a daily run around)
Nothin on the commodores were that great ever haha any ideas where to get one or know of anyone scraping one?
The 5L is a bad design. Its right next to the exhaust manifold. Must use the heat shield though or you'll cook em.
Dude, I don't know where you got $300 from but they can stick that up their ass. Try this, for $65 + postage Brand NEW Holden VN VP VR VS V8 5 0L Starter Motor | eBay Or this, a gear reduction type they recommend for pre-96 models. $100 + postage Holden 253 308 V8 5 0L Gear Reduction Starter Motor | eBay Mind you, it says in the ad for the gear reduction one that it suits VL and earlier... might pay to confirm with the seller that it'll fit yours even though the first ad clearly says 'pre-96'.
Got my old starter you can have but would suit rebuild. Pulled it out coz it was playing up every now and then.
IF it's not the starter it could just be a bad connection to the battery terminal. Mine didn't start when I tried to clean the terminal because of that blue corrosion thing it likes to do. It's a V6, but this might help. Good luck. Edit: Sorry didn't realise thread date.
