Hey there, just a quick question about the model numbers on the gearboxes for VN's and Vp's.

My auto VP transmission is a MD8
My manual VN transmission is an M78

Now im wondering:
Are the Manual gearboxes in VP's also M78's?
And the auto VN's are they MD8's?

Thanks if guys can help me out.
Cheers

Can you get a pic of the compliance plates where those numbers are?

They sound like a trim code or something.

VN-VS i can say are the same - MD8 is Auto, and M78 is manual.

This is my VPs break down just to give you some reference points.

6H8 VP X 19 U P L123456 (build number changed for privacy, hence 123456)

World Manufactures Code
6H8: General Motors Holden

Model:
VN: VN Model
VP: VP Model
VR: VR Model
VS: VS Model

Luxury Code:
K: Executive
L: Berlina
X: Calais

Body Code:
19: Sedan
35: Wagon
80: Ute

Engine Code:
H: 3.8L V6
U: 5.0L V8

Model Year:
P=1993

Tag Number:
L= Adelaide - Elizabeth Plant
123456 = build number

And my option list just for kicks

19l - exterior paint - anthracite - w/ a9f
62l - interior trim - classic beige
a8h - ??
a8x - international pack
a9a - vp upgrade 23oct '92
aq9 - front seat bucket - passenger and driver reclining
c61 - a/con front auto control
gu4 - axle ratio - rear 3.08:1
je5 - anti lock braking system
nv7 - variable effort power steering
ph7 - wheel - 6.5jj X 15 alloyed style
qak - tyre - 205/65r15-sl-r-st-tl-94v
va1 - radiator standard
xw6 - paint finish metallic

those numbers arent on the comp plate, the plate does say MD8 on all of them but then again the engine code is the same from VN up to the VS and didnt look any newer than that but how can the VS engine be same as VN as they say they are all LG2 i think
those numbers are whats printed on the gearbox itself, like a little sticker on top with codes...

and i will also very soon find out whether the 1HDM is interchangable with the 3HDM as im half way thru changing a motor over but i kept the original g/box which was a 3HDM...so far looks as tho everything is pretty much the same

ohk, sounds like your talking about the ratios in the box. But i don't know what they mean (might have a look at mine and see what it says, its sitting in the boot after all haha)

Also the VS engine isn't the same as VN, there was 4 codes, buick V6, V8, Ecotec V6 and super 6, i just too out the 2 that weren't applicable to my car.

i dont think its ratios cos i know the two ratios are identical for these cars (1HDM and 3HDM) i think it must be like a model of box or something cos it just keeps counting up, last i think i saw was a 9HDM which was in the VY.

and i know theres definitly a difference in the VS and VN motors but like on the compliance plate where it says TRANS: MD8 just before that it has ENGINE: LG2 (i think) and i was comparing and saw a VRs2 and VS has TRANS: M30 but the engine code was the same on the VS as the VN which made me think that MD8 doesnt mean alot and that it has more to do with the #HDM...oh well
