You could try a magnefine filter in the return line but if the blockage is in the rack it may not achieve anything.

Our Calais has the same steering system and on the odd occasion the steering was hard on startup. Restarting the car fixed it and it went away permanently when i flushed clean fluid through the system. Recently the problem returned but the fluid is clean so I've fitted one of those filters and the problem is yet to return.

Thanks. I'll look at that. The filter will need to be accessible and I have minimum bend radii on the return line- I guess there's no problem in lengthening the fluid return hose to fit one in.

Yep. Pull the return line off the pump and shove it on the filter and use a new bit of hose to go from the filter back to the pump.
